Who is underwriting the policy through this board? Could they disappear in three years and then you have no coverage? Also, if I buy the 7/100K extended warranty now, can it be made effective when my 3 yrs are up. If not and I buy it 3 yrs from now the price may go up....

The underwriter and administrator is Toyota. Well...Toyota Motor Insurance Services, Inc. to be exact (TMIS) and the contract is written by Toyota Financial Services. Here is a link to the company background. http://www.toyotafinancial.com/about/compa...ound/index.html I don't think there's much risk that they'll be going out of business any time soon.

No matter when you purchase the policy, it starts effective from the vehicles original in-service date and mile 0. So there is nothing to gain in terms of coverage by waiting, it's always as if the policy was purchased on day 1. Think of the 3/36K eligibility window as a long grace period...but by waiting you do put yourself at risk for future price increases since I do have to adjust for them as they occur.

Oh..and by the way Welcome to PriusChat! I see that was your first post.

I have a question. I know people who drive less mileage can get a tailor made extended warranty (i.e.- 7 yrs/ 60,000k miles) but what about those that drive high mileage? I put on about 27k a year. Is it possible to get a 4 (instead of 7) yr/100,000 mile extended warranty?

Thanks.

In the Platinum coverage the only options are for either 6 or 7 years on a 100,000 mile plan.

My Toyota Platnium warranty booklet arrived a couple of days ago!
It's very nice :)
I also have some extra coverage through my auto insurance, so I think I'm very well covered for the next 100,000 miles! :D

Troy, thank you :)

S__T! My friendly dealer talked me into the 6yr/100k ext. warranty too. But get this...........I paid $1800.00.
Can I get out of this deal? I thought the guy was taking care of me. I should have known better. What's worse is that the 6yrs start on the day of purchase, so really I get just 3 additional years. Please advise!

I'm sure someone else will confirm with some details... I just wanted to give you a word since no one has responded all this eve to you.

I sent an email to Toyota Financial and they cancelled my "dealer" warranty and gave me a full credit towards my loan. This was a couple of weeks after I bought the car.

Hi -- Being new on this chat I realized I responded to the discouted Extended Warranty on the wrong thread. So I'm going to post my concern again here -- sorry about the duplication and confusioin it may have caused.

I sent my form into the Warranty Shack yesterday for a quote on the new Prius pkg 3 I'm picking up on Monday 6-25-07 but realize I probably won't hear back from them before then. I know the dealer is going to do his best to talk me into their extended warranty for considerably more bucks. I guess I would like to get confirmation from anyone out there that I should definitely not take the dealer warranty and wait for the discounted warranty from "Warrany Shack"? Is this actually part of the Toyota program or some other kind of warranty from an outside source?

Being a "Rookie" here I'm really impressed with this chat -- thanks to everyone who has contributed and especially to those who set it up!

It is the genuine Toyota extended warranty offered by Toyota Financial Services and sold through a Toyota dealer.

Call Troy for further details:

Here is an update.

This morning I went back to the dealer and told him about my research online and that Toyota's own website quotes a Platinum Ext Wrnty for $1025. Not the $1800 they charged me. The finance guy said the sales manager that did my contract did not know what he was doing(because he fills in for the finance dept on Mondays, the day I went). Still, he was surprised to see Toyota quoting the $1025 price for the Platinum Ext Wrnty. Since it was Saturday he would have to wait until Monday to fix it. I will be out of town so my wife(with Power of Attorney) will go in Monday. She will either remove the Ext Wrnty or get the $1025 version. If all else fails I will contact Troy Dietrich for a better deal.

BTW: He said that the price of the Ext Wrnty goes up the longer you wait to get the Ext Wrnty. Is this true?

Today, I was quoted $1,870 for a 7yr/75K extended warranty by the finance manager at my local dealer. I knew he was over charging me, but could not remember the specific numbers I had read about here. (They get you in that little room and throw all this info and numbers at you--man, they are pros.) I talked him down to $1,470, but now I'm thinking that was still too high.

What do you all think?

well.... considering you can get it for $990... then i personally think $1470 is too high..... i don't have almost $500 to "throw away"....

call or go in and cancel it then buy it here!

I was just quoted: Toyota Platinum 7 yr /100,000 mile Extra Care
plan w/ $0 deductible for $990.00 and the 6 yr / 100,00 mile plan for $875.00
on the Prius.

So, yes, you paid too much. But you have to ask yourself. If you go to this dealer all the time, how pleasant would he be to do the warranty work purchased somewhere else. Yes, he HAS to do the work, but his attitude may be less than enjoyable. Since it's done, and $500 financed with the car is not that many dollars a month, just let it go, and enjoy the car!

Personally, I didn't get any warranty, and while I may purchase it before the factory warranty runs out, I want to see if I purchased a problem vehicle before I do it. If it's as reliable as my Honda's, I will probably NOT get it.

My 2 cents.

Thanks desertbriez and G-Man for your input.

I sent a quote request to Warranty Shack and we'll see what happens.

thank goodness for Troy, we'll probably be buying as soon as we hear back from him. while DH can do any and all labor, parts still aren't cheap

Don't think so.... the warranty is from Day one once you buy it from day one or the day before it hits 36K and the price is the same.
Troys price only goes up if it goes up globally for all.

At least thats my understanding.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(G-Man @ Jun 24 2007, 07:41 AM) </div>
I wouldn't call the finance guy or sales guy when I had a repair, I would just march it into service like anyone else.....
Not sure they would even know or check.... the service guy and those in that department will not pay attention to who you bought it from... they still get paid all the same from Toyota for doing the work... I don' t think they really care and are happy to get your business for repairs as it keeps them in a job.

Another fun fact, at least for Prius owners prior to 2006 is that the free roadside assistance ends at 36,000. 2006 Prius doesn't come with that as I recall.
