02 Prius rear seat question

    Hello, this might sound like a really dumb question, but I just purchased a 2002 prius hybrid and was wondering if the back seats folded down. On first inspection it looked like it was possible due to how the trunk was designed, but after looking for levers everywhere I cant seem to find any, and its not listed in the manual. Am I out of luck, or is there a magical button that will let the back seat fold down?? Thanks!

    I think I read somewhere that on the classic model the batteries are behind the rear seats, thus they don't fold down. Trying to find the reference to that for confirmation!

    Yes, the battery pack is back there, but its down low and under some carpeting so I thought they might still be able to fold.

    The European and Japanese models did fold down. However, the North American version wasn't offered with this option. There is a rather large hole, currently filled with a 'fiber board' type shield.

    My plan is to see if my wife's Echo rear seats can fit in the NHW11 Prius. If so, all I'll need will be the hardware fittings and other pair of Echo seats and the problem is solved.

    The rear seats come out easily enough. First take out the bench seat and then loosen two bolts. The seat backs lift up and out. It may be possible to rig up some sort of 'slip-joint' where the rear seats bolt in that would allow the rear seat backs to be shifted up and fold over the bench. However, it would need a clever hinge.
