Picked up my new Prius on monday, and I'm just a big right now. Been driving around all day (and night), pushing all the buttons and enjoyed the silence when driving on EV mode. Prius sales in Norway are up from 85 cars (total 2006) to 468 so far in 2007. Not that it's a lot of cars, but we are only 4,5 mil. people in Norway and I think it's a good jump I've been reading this forum for the last three months, and just wanted to say thanks to all posters for the information you have given me regarding the Prius. I'll be trying some of the modification tricks this weekend. Short question at the end: My Prius came with a GPS. Is there an easy way to update the maps on it, and is it possible to install other features on it (speed limits).
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(znabel @ Jun 20 2007, 01:58 PM) </div> How I envy you! I have to wait until mid September before I get my Prius here in Norway. As for your question: I don't have first hand experience on the Prius, but I don't think you should be too optimistic. As for speed cameras, the is no way to upload your own data into the NAV in the Prius. And map updates are at best once a year. In this perspective it is better to have a TomTom or Garmin unit. But I'll throw out my Garmin when i get my Prius. By the way, did you order with the IPA? I did, just to get the rear view camera! Stein Tore
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(skanDALE @ Jun 20 2007, 02:07 PM) </div> I'm pretty sure I'll survive without information about speed-cameras and speedlimits - it's just "nice to have" I got my Prius from KB Biler in Denmark, and had to wait 4 months before i got it. Seems like they don't have the Prius in Denmark, but have to order them directly from the factory for each customer. It's a loong wait, but when it saves you a lot of money it's kind of worth it. Mine is with IPA as well, and just like you it's only for the rear view camera. I haven't tried IPA yet, and I'm pretty sure it will be a one time thing when I do (if it work ok I might do it to show off a few times as well )
The GPS NAV data is on a DVD located under the driver's seat. New versions come out from time to time. To update, you simply replace the DVD disk. Welcome to PC, and congratulations on your new Prius. Tom
hello and welcome to PriusChat! Congrats on your new car!! 4 months is a definitely a long time (I "only" had to wait 1½ months). For the IPA to work at its best, you have to position the car properly. If you don't, you'll end up spending a lot of time moving the box on the screen.
Welcome to PriusChat, both znabel and skanDALE! It's exciting to see the Prius sales growing in Norway. One mod you may both be interested in is the Engine Block Heater. The one you see discussed here most is the 110V north American model, but a 240V one exists. Use the Search function to look for posts.
An engine block heater is a very good advice indeed. With the cold winters here, a engine block heater is good not only for mileage, but is also very good for the engine as a whole. By the way, does anybody know if the european Prius has the thermos to keep the engine warm? This will not replace an engine block heater, I'm just curious. On another topic, it's too bad Coastal E Tech doesn't ship outside the US, I'd really like the Ultimate LockPick 3+. I've used my Garmin Nüvi 360 as both GPS and BlueTooth handsfree, and I don't like the thought of having to stop to enter a new destination or call a number not in my address book... :-( But I guess the Prius can't be all perfect. Stein Tore
Hi Stein. As far as I know, the EU Prius does not have the thermos for coolant. I think that's just a north American emissions add-on. The Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) is spun up to about 1000 rpm before fuel and spark are applied, so it is well oiled before it has load. What kind and weight of oil does your car come with? Many here, particularly in the northern US and Canada, use synthetic oil for increased cold lubricity. An EBH will get both the ICE and you warmer faster in the Norwegian winter...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Bill Merchant @ Jun 21 2007, 02:39 AM) </div> I live in the UK and have just fitted the DEFA 240V EBH. This is different to the Toyota one in that it is a plate that bolts on the the back of the block below the coolant drain point. It was still a fiddle to fit and what I am not sure about is did I get a good contact with the heat sink paste. Have you or any body else got any info on what temperature rise you should get after approx 2hrs. Thanks
congrats!!! i see more and more priuses in the traffik in oslo every week just a tip to mark your speedtraps/cameras a bit more manual but : just drive with Your map/navi on when You pass a speedcam/trap push the mark button ,,, You now have a blue flag on it.. when You get home or parked.. go in to the menu and edit Your favourite marks (think the limit is 200),, change the icons on the the speedcameras to "sound icon" and choose the "ding" sound .. ive done this for a year and i think most speedtraps are marked by now.. and i get a nice "ding" sound every time i close into one .its important that You go into the map before going on a trip to say agree to the "toyota message". If You dont , you wil not get any warnings..after agreed ,, YOu will then get the warning sound whatever You have on the screen. its not perfect, since it wont work on first time trips , but atleast You do not forget speedcams/traps... im pretty sure You can get info on where all cams are located, and then put them in manually... shouldnt take more than an hour.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Bill Merchant @ Jun 21 2007, 09:39 AM) </div> I called my preferred Toyota dealer (where I have ordered my Prius) and asked about the oil. All Prii sold in Norway are delivered with Mobile1 5W40 syntetic oil. The dealer also asked me to keep him informed about tips and tricks I learn in these forums, as he wants to learn to know the Prius better... Stein Tore
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Per @ Jun 21 2007, 09:51 AM) </div> In the UK they are £17,500 - £20,000. Which is about $35-40K and we get no tax relief.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(gazz @ Jun 21 2007, 05:10 PM) </div> In Norway there is special purchase tax on new cars, since this year favouring diesels because of the lower CO2 emission. The Prius got NKK 12000 reduction in spite of being a hybrid... A Prius in Norway is between NKK 270.000 and NKK 340.000 (roughly) depending on package. Anyway: Yesterday I drove the 85 km stretch from Tvedestrand to Porsgrunn on the E18, using 4,1 l/100 km of gas. Never used less before, usual consumption is 4,5 l/100 km or more, depending on load and luggage... And almost every trip I make, I see another Prius along the way. All new Prius owners where ever you are: Welcome to miles (and km...) of pure pleasure!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(andreaswin @ Jun 21 2007, 11:09 PM) </div> Its even easier to just obey the speed limits B)
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Sleeper @ Jun 21 2007, 03:42 PM) </div> So if a top of the line Prius in Norway is 340,000 Kr., or at today's exchange rate of 5.97, that would be just about $57,000! At least you get your Prius without the gas tank bladder and you do get an EV switch! Here in Texas they run $22,000 to about $29,000, before a $2,500 dealer discount.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Per @ Jun 21 2007, 09:46 PM) </div> About 131 000 Kr to 173 000 Kr before a 15 000 Kr discount... I'll live with the bladder (and AT-PZEV status) and can add an EV switch...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Bill Merchant @ Jun 22 2007, 09:35 AM) </div> Exchange rates do not give the full story. Global and domestic economics work in mysterious ways... But all cars should be cheaper in Norway, especially the Prius.
Just heard from my Priusdealer in Denmark. Mapupdates can be ordered here: http://www.toyota-mapupdates.eu/. New DVD's are released once a year. There is no speed-camera, speedlimits or other stuff. Just have to keep to the limit i guess Good ting to do if you're getting a Prius in Norway is to buy it from Denmark. I saved about NOK 40 000 (USD 6500) compared to the deal i got from my closest Toyota dealer in Norway. The only difference is that you have to pay customs and taxes yourself when the car arrives, and you have to go to the harbour (instead of the cardealer) to pick it up. I think that the extra paperwork (aobut 4 hours) is worth NOK 40 000
