when i hook my iPod up to my car stereo.... i have the iPod sound turned almost all the way up (basically one click below full blast) and then i have to turn the stereo up into the 20's to 30's.... and i'm NOT a loud music listener..... but this just seems ridiculous! and i doing something wrong? am i syncing the music to the iPod incorrectly (using earbuds i don't have to have it turned all the way up like that!) also.... i know the stereos aren't that great.... but most songs don't sound so hot... then all the sudden i'll get one or two songs that sound just AWESOME (bass, etc) so again.... did i do something wrong in the way i downloaded the songs? or in the way i had iTunes transfer the music to the iPod? thanx!
iTunes has a setting in the Info area to change the volume in case it's too high or low. You may want to experiment with that. I've had to change the volume on some old radio shows as they were too low to begin with.
I've been having the same problem. Which I haven't figured out the proper way to fix it yet. I've just been playing with the settings on the ipod

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Vagabond @ Jun 19 2007, 09:58 AM) </div> i've tried it both ways.... with equalizer off and with it set to bass boost..... the sound is still way too low!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(desertbriez @ Jun 19 2007, 10:41 AM) </div> Have you adjusted the master volume with iTunes as the first reply suggested?
You should check if your iPod's "volume limit" feature is set: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303414 Turn it all the way up to the maximum and see if that helps.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Vagabond @ Jun 19 2007, 10:52 AM) </div> i don't see a master sound.... unless you mean for each individual song????? (and do you know how long that would take? of course.... i haven't tried the multi-track thing... like where i can select all the songs in an album and change the genre.... i guess i could do that and raise the songs from middle (where the default is, i assume... since that's where all my songs seem to be.... to highest...) <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(mmoncur @ Jun 20 2007, 04:56 AM) </div> ok.... i'll see if that helps.... i had it about 3 bars down but not locked..... now it's at max...
Also make sure you are on the latest version of iTunes. There was a fix in the latest release that addresses volume disparity between iTunes music and ripped MP3's if you use the "sound check" feature.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(emtownsend @ Jun 20 2007, 10:13 AM) </div> itunes (and all 4 ipods) have the latest versions!
ok..... ALL my songs are now at sound +100.... and still i have to turn it up to the 40's - 50's for a nice volume (again... not rocking!) cd's of the same songs (cd made through itunes) are WAY better than the ipod.... hmmmmmm i'm within my 30 days to return the dumb thing to best buy! i only bought it to use it in the car (i have a shuffle and mini to use but wanted the video ipod for the car!) UGH!
How are you hooked up to the ipod? I had volume issues when using the headphone jack into the aux input (the cheapest solution, $2). Then, I bought a cable that plugs into the ipod's bottom port instead. That cable costs $20 or $30 , but no more volume problems with this setup.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(McShemp @ Jun 22 2007, 08:54 AM) </div> yes.... through the headphone jack hooked up via an audio/video cable that is hooked to the back of the stereo. (we've also used the aux jack in the center console and still get low sound)
If you have the "latest" iPod, you have a 5.5 gen. My 4th gen works fine w/the JBL "premium" stereo on mine via the aux in jack in the center cubby. I've been running this way for >1.5 years. I turn the volume of the iPod to about 80 to 90% of maximum (anything above that might result in distortion). I have no complaints but CDs do sound better. BTW, my iPod doesn't have the limiter since Apple didn't update the firmware to add that feature on 4th gens. I don't use "sound check" in iTunes and I have NEVER applied volume adjustment to any of my songs (via Ctrl/Cmd-I on a song). Besides the volume, are there any other complaints? If the quality is bad, then also try ripping songs at a higher bitrate. For me, 160 kbps .mp3 is fine. I prefer NOT to use AAC since it may as well be a non-standard. I do this just in case I end up for some reason switching to a non-Apple music player.
i have plenty of volume even for talk radio. i usually have my ipod set at about 67% volume which is what i use with headphones (battery level of the ipod does control volume so this level is adjusted) then i set radio at 25 to 50 depending on whether windows are open. i do use an ipod cable from apple store so that might be the difference why it works better. for music, the volume level for most songs (they are all a bit different) is about 20% lower.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(cwerdna @ Jun 23 2007, 12:30 AM) </div> yes.... 5th gen video (just bought it a couple weeks ago) again.... yes... the only complaint is the sound level for the ipod.... cd's, as i said sound good and i get plenty of volume on am, fm, and cd's! also get plenty of volume on movies! nice booming sound on pirates of the carribean! teens..... 20's if i'm in the mood for louder.... that's why i'm confused/baffled by having to set the sound so high with the ipod (the ipod's sound is almost all the way up... like one little "notch" of color down from max!) now that said............ i have a chord to hook up my ipod at work and i have to do the same thing.... turn that stereo way up using the mini..... so maybe it is an ipod thing? maybe it's just the way it is? maybe i'm being too critical? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm i'll have to check the settings for ripping... (however i assumed that you got a set level/bitrate/whatever??? lol!) when you downloaded... it's not just my ripped from cd songs... it's also the ones i've downloaded!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(desertbriez @ Jun 23 2007, 12:09 PM) </div> I use this Monster Cable which provides an actual "line out" as opposed to the headphone jack. This typically clears any distortion, allowing for crystal clear sound. You do get an occasional very low background hum as the ipod drive spins up. At any rate.. what you are looking for is an actual "line out" which cannot be achieved through the headphone jack.
I just got an 07 and was stoked to know that i can hook up my ipod directly rather than going through an fm transmitter. i just got a cable to hook up through the headphone directly. volume is way too low. it needs an amp or something. i tried looking for a line out solution from monster but i can't find one. the griffin one is like 50 bucks. anyone know of a fairly inexpensive cable solution to boost the signal? thanks John
