I was reading some back threads, and I came across this post in the thread entitled "wrong things your salesman told you" and now I'm confused about the use of the smart key system:

I'm very confused. Our salesperson also told us that the car would unlock when we approached it with the smart key fob in our pocket. Is this not true?

    Thank you.

Yes it will UNlock. But it will not LOCK by itself when you leave the car. You have to push the rubber button and wait for the flash and beep. Make sure you don't have a key fob (for the Prius) inside the car because it won't if there is one inside.

The front doors or the hatch will unlock when you place your hand next to the detector that is built into the inside of the front door handle or touch the button that opens the hatch.

So, the salesman probably wasn't trying to mislead you, but technically was wrong. The SKS will detect your approach, but won't actually unlock the car until you place your hand on or near the detector(s).

It will not unlock by itself. You have to touch the door handle (there's a black strip behind it) before it unlocks. It also doesn't lock by itself. You have to press the black button on the door or hatch.

However, if you unlock the car and don't open the door within 30 seconds, it will re-lock.

FYI the two front doors only need the touch of your finger/hand on the inside of the handle. For the hatch, you actually have to press the release once to hear the beeps, and then the second press will actually open it. Also, you can program the Smart Key to open the doors in various combinations. It's easy to do with the fob, and it's probably around page 30(?) in your owner's manual.

FWIW, I think that the salesguy may have explained it correclty, and my brain had simplified it.

Actually, when you have the Smart Key, the interior lights go on automatically as you approach the car. It's like it's waking up and saying "hello" to you!!! :)
