We vaguely remember the plot of the '99 comedy "Mystery Men" starring Ben Stiller but the 1979 Corvette Limo that we found on e-bay definitely rang a bell. In the movie, the stretched Vette served as the super-villain’s (Casanova Frankenstein played by Geoffrey Rush) personal car. The Vette’s transformation included extending the frame to over 23 feet (7 meters) total length and modifying the interior by adding two more opposing seats, bar, lights, and rear T-tops. Before its procrustean metamorphosis, the limo started its life as a 1979 3rd-generation Corvette fitted with an 185Hp strong 350c.i. V8 motor and an automatic transmission. Tangentially, did you know that the 1979 Corvette sold 53,807 units, a record number still standing today? Photos Here
I've always regarded this "stretch limo" as one of the cleverest and classiest mods of all time. "Stretch" in this case has a somewhat different meaning than the usual context. [attachmentid=8843] Only one made, and it was destroyed when driven off a cliff. A scouring of assorted sources identifies the original Jag here as an XKE with a 6 cylinder inline, not the V-12, that began life as a convertible. OK trivia fans, what are the more salient facts about this remarkable auto? Mark Baird Alameda CA

I love<strike>d</strike> that movie. One of my all-time favourites. Even my kids like it. I can still picture Harold's maniacal grin as he took the cutting torch to his Mother's present.

Think of how far you could drive without the ICE if the entire undercarriage of a stretch Prius was crammed full o' batteries!
