Does the ICE ever spin with no fuel?

    Well, so far I haven't seen it. I'm crippled as I'm using a Scangauge II. Funny, the MFD will say 0.0 l/100 km, but the Scangauge will indicate the ICE turning at 970 RPM and using 1.5 l/hr of fuel (while the car is traveling at high speed - around 100 km/hr). That's rich idle territory. I wonder if this is an artifact of how the Scangauge works or if it's real, done to limit emissions.

    Any theories?

    The ScanGauge II has some limitations there.

    "Another issue has to do with Fuel Cut. The ScanGauge II has no way to tell if the ICE is in Fuel Cut or if the car is at speed running at idle as you would in a NICE-On. Although the FE calculated and shown is very high under this condition (between 130 and 250 MPG depending on speed and ICE size), fuel is still shown being consumed when it is not thus causing an ever increasing error to build in. "

    Ken is correct, and as usual has very good references. It is true that this "Warp Stealth" or "ICE-Spin" mode is a fuel cut mode, essentially it's a high speed electric-only mode where the ICE simply spins at ~950-975rpms in order to keep the PSD (Power Split Device) and the attached motors from redlining.

    I concur with the above. CAN-View clearly shows when the car is in "ICE-Spin" mode. It normally happens when descending hills above 42 mph (or if some other condition exists where the ECU doesn't want to allow the car to go into stealth mode), or if decelerating from high speed, such as when exiting from an Interstate highway.
