Hi everyone this is my first post here at Priuschat.com. I just ordered a Scangauge II and Shark Fin Antenna from the shop here and have been thinking of different places to mount my Scangauge once it arrives.

I was wondering if anyone would like to give me some ideas or even pictures of your install locations. If there is already a thread regarding this could someone please point me in the right direction?

    Thanks, Brandon

I take mine from car to car, so I usually just leave it flopping around the dash or in the cup holder somewhere. Indecision is the key to flexibility.

I need to have the gauge in eye view so I can keep an eye on the road too. I'm looking for more of a clean/custom look install. I saw a post where someone installed it in the area under the radio. I like that idea the best so far but it may be a little too far out of view while driving.

In the corner is where I installed mine...

I was surprised how well the wire disappeared into the dash. It effortlessly poked behind the waterseal of the door and tucked underneath the steering-wheel area.

The location is very handy, almost in your line-of-sight. Yet, not distracting.

There are a coupla installation posts in the Mods section. I have mine centered on the steering column, just in front of the where the column enters the dash. I only used light tack double stik tape temporarily. I tried the box under the radio, but I use the space for other things, so I'll probably leave it on the steering column. (Reminds me of the Sun tach that 60's muscle cars screwed to the steering column, like my old Mustang). Somebody also mounted it high to the left side, above the inside rearview mirror, though the cable routing sounds a pain.

I mounted mine behind the steering wheel and ran the cable through the space between the column and the dash. I figured it would be the best spot for being in a somewhat natural viewing area and it is pretty clean other than seeing the cable just stick out of the side a little bit.

Center dash - just below the CD slot - I since have cleaned up cable routing. Easy to read and punch buttons, less visible than on the top of the dash for outsiders/vandalism/theft - I find I use the trip meter modes the most.

I found a heads up reading position I am very happy with.

    1. Originally, I mounted mine above the rear view mirror. I noted that the pushbuttons of the of the ScanGuage rattled slightly while in motion, so I took it apart and added vey thin foam between the pushbuttons and internal switches to fill the gap between button and switches so they don't rattle. While the guage is open, you can tape a small peice of cardboard over the side RJ-45 connector with black electrical tape and then reassemble it to disguise the unused connector nicely.

    2. But it was hard to read from the angle off to the side, so I have moved it to the bottom of the rear view mirror. I finally broke down and just used the supplied velcro on the bottom of my mirror.

For the first mounting location, the supplied cable was just long enough to run up the window piller, over the headliner, but when I wanted to move it to another car, I would have to pull out the cable. An etra cable from ScanGuage is about 30 bucks. I needed a little more length to run to the bottom of the mirror, so I got a regular Ehternet cable and a Femail to Female connector. Now the ScanGuage cable is coiled up under the dash so I can unplug it from the Female to Female Connector and OBDII connector for temporary use diagnosing other cars.

    3. The ethernet cable fits inside the existing channel behind the mirror with other mirror cable. When routing the cable up the window piller, be sure to go behind the airbag so you don't block it's deployment.

Mounted mine in the small storage box below the radio, drilled a hole in the bottom, no cable showing. Not perfect for seeing but I was keen not to have anything on display to temp the thieves. Like the idea of being able to just shut the cover and get out.

I was actually wondering if law enforcement might mistake mine on the bottom of the mirror as a radar detector and give me a ticket where I might have otherwise received a warning. I don't actually drive much over the speed limit, but I did get a ticket last month because a guy was going 55 in the left lane in a 60 zone. When I went to pass on the right, he sped up to 63 or so, and I knew he would slow down again if I got behind him, so I temporarily reached 70 to get around him before the next merging traffic, and just then, Motorcycle patrollman under the underpass. DOUGH!

Mine is like John's, only on the right hand side, above the power button, so I can glance at it and the speedometer at the same time.

Well thanks for all the ideas guys. I ended up installing min just above the steering wheel due to easy visibility. I still like the idea of installing it in the little compartment under the radio but I think it would be a little to hard to view the scangauge and the road. You never know though, I may move it eventually.

Exactly what I did. It looks like a very professional install this way. Makes it easy to unplug the SG2 from the cable and remove if I want to use it in another vehicle (with another cord). Then I can use the storage box by putting the felt pad back in to cover the hole and pushing the down in the hole. I find the SG2 easy to see in this spot with the box lid open. Installing the SG2 in this space keeps it away from the heat of the sun.

    Hi John,

I like the location.. any downsides -- rattles from the buttons... issues with leaving the unit on the dash in the sun... visiblility to passersby, etc?

    Thanks!

Rattling buttons can be a problem wherever the Scan Gauge is mounted. I got some light weight 1/8 inch foam and opened the case to place it between the buttons and swithces inside. That quiets the buttons, and Scan Gauge should do this at their factory. I think I will suggest it.
