did anyone else see the article on the 2008 Highlander it comes standard with and EV mode. so does this mean we can ask for a factory install for the prius without voiding warranties?

This is pretty old news. The issue will be the PZEV-AT rating the Prius holds and the HiHy will not. I'm sure Toyota feels certain that the HiHy will make it's emissions rating even w/ the EV button, but it's not as certain w/ the Prius.

You could ask for a lifetime supply of free gas, too. Just because Toyota decides to put the button in the Highlander doesn't mean they'll put it in the Prius. But all the evidence and 3 years of experience does suggest that a properly-installed EV switch will not void your warranty. It's the PHEV conversion that Toyota says will void the warranty, but even that could be contested in court. I'd be very surprised if Toyota put the button in the 2008 Prius. But the 2009, according to rumors, will be a major model revision, and since nobody really knows anything, we can dream all we like about what it might have. I'd like it to be a PHEV with 100 miles of freeway-capable EV capacity. But I'm not holding my breath.

Could someone please expalin in clear yet simple terms how an EV button would adversely affect the prius' EPA emissions rating??? I would think being able to run on even less petrol would be a positive boost to further lower emissions? Am I missing something here?

In most cases you'll disturb the normal operation of the programming and cause the car to use more gas. Further, on of our members spoke w/ a Toyota engineer who explained that there was a concern that the EV button use could allow the CATS to get too cold...when that happens emissions increase.
