did anyone else see the article on the 2008 Highlander it comes standard with and EV mode. so does this mean we can ask for a factory install for the prius without voiding warranties?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(MJGreen @ Jun 2 2007, 02:32 PM) </div> Are you sure it wasn't an article from an overseas source???
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(mcbrunnhilde @ Jun 2 2007, 07:14 PM) </div> Wow, if this is for a 2008, do we know the prius not to have it in the 2008 either? I remember reading the prius not having it for emitions reasons.
This is pretty old news. The issue will be the PZEV-AT rating the Prius holds and the HiHy will not. I'm sure Toyota feels certain that the HiHy will make it's emissions rating even w/ the EV button, but it's not as certain w/ the Prius.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(MJGreen @ Jun 2 2007, 02:32 PM) </div> Sure, you could ask for a factory-installed EV button. You could ask for a lifetime supply of free gas, too. Just because Toyota decides to put the button in the Highlander doesn't mean they'll put it in the Prius. But all the evidence and 3 years of experience does suggest that a properly-installed EV switch will not void your warranty. It's the PHEV conversion that Toyota says will void the warranty, but even that could be contested in court. I'd be very surprised if Toyota put the button in the 2008 Prius. But the 2009, according to rumors, will be a major model revision, and since nobody really knows anything, we can dream all we like about what it might have. I'd like it to be a PHEV with 100 miles of freeway-capable EV capacity. But I'm not holding my breath.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(mcbrunnhilde @ Jun 2 2007, 04:14 PM) </div> it was an article on MSN.com ; i'm thinking if they are offering in the highlander, the same may be offered for and factory mods on Prius owners. seems logical.
we get the EV button as standard here in Europe, and I know they get it in Japan, so why don't you guys get it in the states ? Just puzzled ...

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(MJGreen @ Jun 2 2007, 02:32 PM) </div> To add injury to insult, the LS600h L will also have the EV switch so that makes TWO cars coming in with the switch.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Tideland Prius @ Jun 3 2007, 10:43 AM) </div> needless to say I'm not thrilled, I'm sure it has nothing to do with our dependence on oil or anything policital like that! i'm confident that nothing sinister is involved.....or am I?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(MJGreen @ Jun 3 2007, 01:45 PM) </div> I don't see the connection in your comments b/w oil dependence and a luxury toy like an EV button.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(efusco @ Jun 3 2007, 02:06 PM) </div> There is a clear connection between politics and the increased use of gasoline, not trying to open a political debate however I have no doubt some lobbying had to go on in the design of hybrid vehicles in the US.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(MJGreen @ Jun 3 2007, 07:29 PM) </div> While that's true I don't think it has anything to do with the EV button...I think it has more to do with the overly complex EPA emissions standards and fear from Toyota that the EV button might violate some portion of those rules....to get it approved would've required a delay in getting the Prius to the US.
Could someone please expalin in clear yet simple terms how an EV button would adversely affect the prius' EPA emissions rating??? I would think being able to run on even less petrol would be a positive boost to further lower emissions? Am I missing something here?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(bgdrewsif @ Jun 3 2007, 11:12 PM) </div> The point is you can't (except in very specific conditions with very cautious and judicious use) save gas (aka petrol) w/ an EV button. In most cases you'll disturb the normal operation of the programming and cause the car to use more gas. Further, on of our members spoke w/ a Toyota engineer who explained that there was a concern that the EV button use could allow the CATS to get too cold...when that happens emissions increase.
PHEV= Part hybrid electric vehicle? prius hybrid electric vehicle? i scanned the sticky and didnt see this one....
