Has anyone heard clicking noise when driving on the little uneven freeway? The noise is seem to be behind the glove box, kinda something is bouncing and hit something (especially tires are at 37 psi or higher).

Problem with my 2007 Prius and is very annoying!!

Please let me know what's causing this noise. I think I need to record this bouncing noise and bring it to the dealer.

    Thank you. :p

I have also heard this in my '07, but it went away. Is it the filter behind the glove box?

Could be the filter. There's also the ventilation damper behind the glove box, Or, better yet, there might be something stuck in the air duct behind the glove box. Have you removed your glove box to figure it out?

I hope both of you are right about the air conditioning filter behind the glove box. I took out the glove box and investigate how loose the Air filter while it's in it position. Well, the filter it's little bit loose. For now I just use a piece of tape and secure its movement.

I have to wait and see when I drive to work on Tuesday, and will let you know.

    Thank you for your advices.

I was hoping the problem caused by the air filter; too bad it's not. Strangely, the noise only occurs in the morning but not in the afternoon!! This is really weird!!

    Thank you for all help.

Are you sure it's not the plastic shelf in the upper part of glove box? Very common source of clicking sounds. Take it out and see if it goes away.

I had a similar problem and it seems to have, for the most part, gone away. I thought it came form the plastic at the bottom of the windshield on the outside.

One thing is for sure, the windshield and it’s angle etc seems to focus the sound in the car and give the impression that it’s generated from the dashboard.
My baby seat makes noise and it seems to come from the front, but if I move my head the sound direction comes from the back seat.

Where the sound comes from can be misleading. I've been certain I've had a sound coming from the dash. I've been fooled several times. Both times it's been from an empty pop can in the holder in the center console.

It's probably not the case for you, but check for other possibilities.

Thanks Dave, I notice that too when there is something in the cup holders it does make noise, but I've cleaned out everything including things in the center console, the empty compartment under the radio, I even made sure the side pockets on the doors are empty, but the pastic ratttling still could be hear only driving on rough concrete highways and in Seattle most of the highways are concrete. Its just very annoying when the rest of the car is quiet and the only thing is that rattling sound.

Same here. My rattling comes and goes. I confess I've been too lazy to bring it into the dealer and everytime it gets just to the point of driving me bonkers (and thus to the dealer) it goes away. I'm beginning to think my Prius is a sentient and ever-so-slightly sadistic being. But that's just me.

Yes, it comes and goes... drive me nut!!! The sound almost the sound of the passenger seat bell tongue is hitting or bouncing on the vertical plastic pannel when unused.

I hope, when I have time bring it to the dealer, and hope the dealer has known the problem.

Thank you all for your input.

Nope. I took the plastic shelf in the upper part, and also everything on the bottom glove box out.

I'm voting for moxiequz's "sentient and ever-so-slightly sadistic being".

You don't have to be paranoid to have someone(thing) out to get you.

That's just a variation of the other major paranoia quote.

I have a 2007 model Prius. Ever since the day I bought it off the dealership lot I have noticed this sound. I hear it in the dash on the passenger side. When I turn left or right I hear it sliding across something in the dash. Then it goes "click". It must be flat and smooth on the bottom surface in order for it to slide about. It is really aggravating almost to the point of me taking it in to the dealership to have it addressed.

I was reading my owner's manual to see if I could pin point the problem, when I stumbled across the fact that there is an Airbag assembly for the passenger in the dash!! Maybe this is what is causing the noise. I however seriously doubt it. I thought more about it later and have decided that it is more than likely an electrical assembly box that was not properly secured.

In order to have this remedied, I more than likely would have to have my dash taken apart and be without my car for a few days. I also can forsee the dealership making cosmetic damage to the plastic dash. So, is it really worth the aggravation? I dont know at this point.

The car is under warranty so if they break it they fix it. I am going to take it Monday, June 4, 2007 down to the dealership and leave it with them for the day and they will see what is causing the problem.

I have had the sliding sound in my passenger dash since I picked up my car in October 2004. If you can find it there's a free engine block heater and install for you.

    Justincase,
Please keep us updated as to what the dealer found. I have the same issue about taken it to the dealer and having the dash damaged by them. I recently took my 07 Carmy in for a simple tire rotation and those knuckleheads ended up damaging the wheels when they used that air gun to secure the nuts, there were deep scratches and nicks around the wheel bolt holes. I ended up without my car for 4 days while they try to fix and repaint but when they recoated the wheels they ended up sealing all kinds of dirt underneath it, so I rejected the repair and they finally decided to give me all new wheels.

    Okay guys,

I took the Prius in to be remedied of the clicking noise behind the glove box. I took the tech out to a parking lot that was empty that morning. I demonstrated the noise to him perfectly. He then opens the sunglass holder and takes out my wireless clicker that opens the gate to the driveway. He shuts the sunglass holder (right above the rear view mirror) and asks me to demonstrate it to him again. NOISE DISAPPEARED.

    I could not believe it!!!

He said that he learned this trick from working on a Toyota Tundra. You see, in the Tundra the same thing was happening, but the owner said the noise was coming from behind the CD player in the dash. Well, there was 4 techs in the Tundra all listening for this noise driving down the road. One of them had their ear pressed against the glass windshield.

The acoustics of the cabin was allowing the sound from the sunglass holder to transmit through the windshield and behind the dash somewhere. The same goes for the Toyota Prius Hybrid. The way the vehicle was crafted it permitted the sound to travel from the sunglass holder in the ceiling---travel down the windshield--and hide itself behind the glovebox. It was very odd how this lets sound travel into peculiar places. Well anyways, morale of story....if you hear a clicking noise in your glovebox...try cleaning out the sunglass holder. This may save you from a lot of annoyances.

I hope this information can benefit you all. It sure has saved me a lot of aggravation now.

I just saw this thread, and I'm glad you found the source of the noise.

I was just about to kick in with my own story: got the car, and a day later went down to a friend's house and we installed the Coastal E-Tech lockpick for the audio/video. I'm driving home, and I hear a buzzing noise coming from behind the dash. *$)#*!! Ah well, the dash is easy enough to take apart. The whole two hour drive I'm thinking about what it could be...

As I turn down my street for the final two blocks, it hits me--the buzzing is the clip on my garage door opener that's clipped to the visor. I grab it with my hand, and sure enough--the buzzing goes away. Take my hand off, and the buzzing starts.

    So there you have it.

I will try to see if it's in the sunglass (I have nothing inside the sunglass holder), also I don't have garage opener because I use the home link.

I went to dealers and the service mgr went with me for an hour but can not duplicated. I also tell him it only happen in the morning, he said come back when you heard the noise again (within 3 years 36K Miles) I told him we have extended warranty but he said Extended warranty might not apply for this clicking noise!!.

Well, one thing I noticed when the temperature is below 63 degree F (from the MFD) then pretty sure about the noise but it goes away when temperature get higher.

Update: Check Sunglass nothing inside no vibration from this place.

I think the rattle noise is fixed now. :p

This morning the temperature went down to 57 degree F, I brought my Prius to the dealer, luckily I can duplicate the rattle noise; the Toyota Technician rode with me, and he spot the cause. As long as he push his hand on the two plastic pieces, the rattle noise stop. There were two plastic pieces (on the passenger side) one is long plastic piece cover the side curtain airbag and other plastic piece next to small triangle glass.

Sorry, I know picture is much much better than words; I will take a picture, and post after I pick my car from the dealer.

PS: Again dealer said this problem will not cover after 36Kmiles or 3 Years, even you bought the Extended warranty.

    Update:

Here is the description on the invoice:
-Right front Pillar Garnish and Plastic cover loose, causing the rattle noise.

    Here is the fix:
-Removed tight front pillar garnish. Right side 1/4 glass re-installed, test drive ok now.

    Attached is the picture,
