    I've only managed to squeal the tyres once and that was making a left turn on a main street.

    Most tire squeal is from one wheel moving out of sync with the other. Easy to do on very smooth concrete. I used to do it frequently with a 79 volvo 244 and the looks I got! LOL cause I could do it at parking lot speeds.
    That was the one thing that I really liked about the prius is the almost 300 lb of torque.
    people so often over look torque (particularly the kids in honda civics with a coffee can for an exhaust system)
    If you ever race one with a muscle car when they catch up at the next light, roll down your window and say "its called Torque, Look into it" and keep going :)

    How do you figure? Toyota's estimated net peak horsepower is 110hp between the two. 76hp from the gas engine, and approx 28hp from the battery = 104hp. They manage 6hp from somewhere else.

    You can't add the electric motor and gas engine together because some of the electric power comes straight from the gas engine via the generator.

    Hi Htmlspinner,

    Toyota has said that the acceleration that results in the Prius HSD would require a 2.0 DOHC engine in a traditional automatic transmission car. The reason a traditional car is not faster, even though it has more HP, is due to torque converter losses, shifting times, and transmission ratio range (especially at the low end). The Prius transmission has a higher maximum ratio, matching the engine to the vehicle speed better at low speeds. At least two European car makers are coming out with 6 and 7 speed transmissions these days - to gain the same effect.

    So, no the Prius only has 104 hp continuous, 110 hp in bursts, but the efficiency of the HSD results in the additional 35 HP effect.

    Like Amory Lovins says - its not the device, its what people what to do with the device. People want to acellerate and travel with a car, not point to HP numbers.

    I posted this Allion vs. Prius comparison (Allion, Sicon tC and Prius are based from the same platform) almost 3 years ago. The equivalent is not 145hp but 152 hp instead.

    Thanks to Donee for a great explanation. I'd like to add that Prius delivers consistent power compare to the automatic tranny cars (BTW, Allion has mechanical CVT).

    Comparing with auto tranny and e-CVT... Gear transmission need to rev from 70hp -> 152hp -> Change Gear -> 70hp -> 152hp -> Change Gear etc... On average, you probably get 120hp with shift lags.

    e-CVT in Prius delivers 28hp instantly and all 110hp in about a second, all the way without pausing.

    The only way I have been able to get actual wheelspin out of a Prius is with the wheel cranked all the way to the left, on wet pavement, doing a full brakestand and the "dropping" the brake pedal. Squeal is an entirely different matter. The new Camry, Civic, and Altima hybrids are capable of quicker 0-30 acceleration than the Prius if someone knows how to drive them. The Prius has plenty of power and acceleration for every day driving but it is one of the slowest accelerating vehicles I have ever driven, including my 1997 Geo Metro...

    Oooh, careful with that! :eek: I believe the driveline joints are weakest when the wheels are turned all the way to the side. Atleast that's how it is with the Birfield joints on my 4Runner.

    Pehaps, but any racer know that torque, not horsepower wins any acceleration contest. This is where the eCVT excels by theoretically providing full torque from a standstill.

    My question would be: Where does this TQ leave off for the HP to take over? In a normal new V8 that is usually around 4400-4800rpm then HP starts to climb and TQ drops. In the Prius it rates a super TQ number but only to 1200rpm which in most cars is just beyond idle. So if peak HP is upwards of 4000+rpm how much TQ do we have in the upper ranges as HP is climbing and how does the CVT take all of this into account? If it were a normal gas engine and trans I would have an easy time figuring it all out but without a dyno sheet and understanding the CVT there is nothing clear cut about this car's performance. lol

    Anyone know if it is unsafe to put the Prius on a chassis dyno?

    i squeal the tires all the time. the car is used to my jet-like acceleration. as the engine kicks in the tires usually squeal a bit... then again... i'm usually turning ( long left hand turns ) or there are huge sidewalk lines (perfect for the little entertaining squeal) hehe

    I can think of no reason a Prius could not be placed on a chassis dyno.

    Horsepower = torque x rpm / 5252

    Below 5252 rpm any engine's torque number will always be higher than its horsepower number, and above 5252 rpm any engine's horsepower number will always be higher than its torque number. At 5252 rpm the horsepower and torque numbers will be exactly the same.

    I thought adding in the electric portion would change the observed results. We realize that an engine will have a peak TQ point and an area where TQ and HP will cross and one (HP) will continue to rise while the other (TQ) falls but adding in a completely seperate power source, independent of the engine, would seem likely to change things up a bit. Apparently the coupling system and software joining the two was well thought out so as t be seamless. That is pretty dam cool. :)

    On my commute there is one stoplight before the onramp to the freeway, onramp goes uphill pretty steep. It's one of those that's 2 lanes and merges to 1 before hitting the freeway. I like to drag the big SUVs up the onramp, I usually beat them because I always have a full traction battery there (and they don't realize that little Prius is dragging them until its too late!) Smoke 'em every time :)

    Back in 2005 I put my Prius on our Dynojet Chassis dyno and posted the results here along with the HP/TQ and A/F ratio.

    Perhaps someone here still has this graph that I posted????
