OK..... so i haven't let the gas "pips" get down since i've had my prius until now..... i'm down to 2..... i'm assuming, from what i'm reading on here, that when i get to the final "pip" it will start flashing, and like other cars with their little gas pump symbol, i still have a few (several) miles i can drive? i DON'T want to run out of gas... but i want to finally do a full tank fill up! (am i making ANY sense here?)
yes, you are making perfect sense. Once it starts blinking u probably have anywhere from 30 to 50 miles left....give or take ;p.
ok.... thanx!!!!! (now i just hope i can make it to the weekend on 2 pips so i can buy gas when we go to sam's club cheaper! i think i'll make it that long/far but seeings how it's my first full tank..... it's all a guess!)
You, I was searching all through the menus today trying to find a place where estimates the mileage left on the tank. I guess there is not one? Now that is one thing I will miss from my Explorer. I'll try to watch for when the blinking starts.
When the last pip is blinking and the "Add Fuel" comes up, it may not be 30 to 50. It may be only 5. I fill up at 2 pips.
Yeah, GoEco, there is no "Miles Until Empty." Many people have attempted to speculate why that is. The one I like is the theory that since the engine does not run all the time, it is not possible for the Prius to estimate exactly how far you can travel until it runs out of gas. Another explanation deals with the bladder, explaining that it is not possible for the Prius to perfectly estimate the amount of gas remaining. Whatever the reason, it's just not there. desertbriez, your best option is to not even push it. Get gas when the last pop starts blinking.
I just did my first fillup, I was down to one (not yet flashing) pip. I got just over nine gallons in.
<_< The nickname "GUESS GAUGE" is very appropriate for the Prius' fuel level indicator. For nearly 3 years, and in my 2004 traded for a 2007 Prius, I have almost always added fuel at one UNBLINKING pip and have never fun out of fuel. Attempts to assign amount of fuel per pip can not be accurate - the GUESS GAUGE is not linear and ambient temperature affects the flexibility of the fuel bladder.
The last pip does not start blinking immediately. When the last pip appears you have ???? fuel remaining. Later, it will start to blink and you have ?? fuel remaining. Some people routinely get 30 miles more. Some have run out of fuel after 5 miles. Best rule: fill up whenever convenient once it's down to 2 pips. Fill up at the very first possible opportunity when it gets to one pip. Fill up NOW if the last pip starts to blink. Don't try to push it. What's the point? You may get to come back here and brag about how much gas you got in, but is it worth the risk of running out of gas? Also, DON'T try to force more gas in than it wants to take. You may be able to squeeze another gallon in. But in doing so you also may damage the vapor-recovery system. It is not worth damaging that, and spewing out more pollution as a result, just to be able to brag that you got more miles on a tank. It's a great car. Have fun with it, but don't try to push its fuel or range limits.
well, drat.... guess i'll have to pay our gas prices then and not wait til we go to sam's this weekend because on the way to work this morning i'm down to one non-blinking pip..... daniel... i'm no so much concerned with the whole "how much gas i got in" because i've read the stories of the backfiring gas tank..... and the odd amounts people get in..... although i did want to see how far we could get on a tank (but not to the point of possibly running out! i'm not that anal!) so i will see an "add fuel" notice on my guages? as well as blinking IF i let it get down that low?
You will have to go to a gast station sometime, might as well do it while you still have gas, instead of having to walk a few miles to the nearest gas station. Dont push it.
The fuel pump need gas to cool it,when you run low the pump dont cool and will burn up.The computer knows you ran out of gas and you will pay to have it replaced.Easy job to replace pump but the hard part is to remove the gas tank to get the pump out. good luck

Adjusted for temps I got 70 miles on the blinking pip in 70+ degree F weather and 20 miles for +30 degrees F and lower weather. anywhere from 10.3 gallons to 6.4 gallons is a fill up when the last blinking pip starts. 53 MPG versus 39 MPG. 400 mile tanks versus 280 mile tanks. You can figure out the cold fill up/MPG versus the warm fill up/MPG using the above numbers... it's that drastic. the car's smart, it'll tell you and show you and keep reminding you you get gas. YMMV.

yeah, I've come to rationalize it like this, since the car is so awesome: Cheaper but more frequent winter fill-ups, spendier but less frequent summer fill-ups. either way the car lets u know when to fill. you can challange those reminders, but it doesn't care if u ignore them and run out. it's still a machine. yet, I can't help but see it as smiling and happy as it uses less and pollutes less!
