I think I said above that it doesn't exist in MD.

We just switched from Farmer's to Safeco...
And, we are switching our house to Safeco, too... so, we get a nice discount on both.
Farmer's raised my rate on my Malibu when someone hit it in a parking lot (I wasn't even in the car)... and, that driver completely paid for the repairs. Completely. Himself. and Farmer's raised MY rates???

    I hate all insurance companies.

I'll just add that I work for one of the larger national companies. We have an index of the customer retention each company has, it is an accurate way to show how well customers rate you. I believe that USAA is rated #1 in loyalty. I'll try to remember to post the list tomorrow at work, its public info.

Just wanted to add that from personal experiece that Nationwide is the absolute wost when it comes to paying claims. They refused to pay a claim from some jackass who backed into my wife's parked car even though there were several witnesses who saw him drive off and a police report was filed. Thankfully my insurance covered it and is in a lawsuit to recover my claim.
Also I know from a family member that Progressive will lowball you if your car gets totalled and try to only pay you your loan payoff amount - the deductible.

I've been with Sate Farm over the past 5 or so years and it seems that they've been fairly reliable thus far. In AZ, I get free glass coverage - a good thing as I've gone through 2 windshields in < 1 year, and my 3rd is already damaged.

Long time ago - before I was with state farm myself, someone rear-ended me who had State Farm, and they were VERY reasonable to deal with. I had a rental car and my car was fixed at the shop of my choice with no hassles.

Then when I did an online insurance pricing quote via Progressive, it turned out that State Farm was cheaper in my situation, so I switched. I now have home, life, and a couple of financial products as well. I've yet to have a claim other than glass with them.

My 6 month rate on my 2004 with 100/300, under/uninsured, rental car, roadside, and $500 deductable w/ free glass is $446. Keep in mind, that's a result of multi-line discounts and customer loyalty discounts, as well as being accident/ticket free for a while. I also drive quite a bit, which surprisingly didn't affect the rate that much.

    Hope this helps.

We have Indiana. I traded for a new Honda Civic Hybrid last Thursday and 1000 deductible is about 900/yr. I traded my wife's 04 Solara Convertible Saturday for a 2005 Prius. I haven't heard what the premium is yet.

I switched from Geico to Travelers when I bought Phoebe because they give a discount for hybrids. I just paid $688 for a full year of maximum coverage. I haven't yet submitted a claim so I can't say anything about their service but I'm more than happy with their prices.

I added my new 2007 Prius to my 21st Century Policy and the cost came out to $416 for the new Prius and $420 for my 2001 Ford Escape - total $836 for 6 months. 21st has been great on my claim for my 3 week old Prius that was totaled a week ago, but there definitely was another party at fault, so I don't know what effect the accident will have on my 6 monthly payment.

I LOVE my experiences with Farmers insurance. They may be a little bit more than the discount crew, but your claim will be handled quickly and professionaly. I've had three claims with them and they have been terrific. I never thought I'd say I love my insurance company.

I agree with the post about USAA. If you're elgible (either military or parents are military) then give them a call. I've been a member for the past 8 years and have always had a great experience. Glad that State Farm dropped me after 2 little claims and we switched. I've had Geico as well and our rates did seem to raise every 6 months. I started working there in January and love it. We beat 90% of the quotes from other companies and are #1 in Customer Service.

Something to watch out for with other companies is that to get you to switch they'll not factor in any tickets or accidents you have and then about a month later you'll have a raither rude surprise waiting for you.

USAA reps don't make a commission or get sales bonuses (like Geico) so you know they are working in your best interest.

They're also financing my loan for 4.95% (beating Navy Federal). =)

Is Pemco available where you are? If so, they do 12 month policies and their 12 month rates are comprable to most insurers 6 month policies.

Travelers charged us a $490.00 "Loss Experience Surcharge" on our home owners policy THREE years after we filed a claim for a chimney fire. They covered $3000 out of the $3500 it cost to repair the chimney. The claim was filed August 2003. We moved June 2004. The charge was a percentage of our NEW HOME's insurance policy - not on the home that received the benefit. I have a complaint pending with the SCC regarding this fraudulent charge.

I have had Safeco for years. A Liberty Mutual agent talked me into switching, and they treated me like crap on a claim, so I went back to Safeco and remain happy. Actually have had about 4 not my fault claims, and they never questioned them or raised my rates.

I noticed that Geico is the highest. Wonder if that is to pay for their advertising budget?

I also have had excellent experience with Farmers insurance. I have been using the same agent for over 20 years and am happy as I can be. Claims are handled quickly and I believe fairly and I like dealing with a human being instead of just an automated system or random call center employee. A quick call to "Jim" and I'm taken care of!

    I recently shopped,

    Allstate - 1300 dollars (Wth!)
    Geico - 820 dollars
    State Farm - 600
    Farmers - 690
    Progressive - 700

Insurance is expensive when your under 25, despite never having any claims, having a high deductible, and having only one speeding ticket (30 mph in a 20 mph-zone in an out of state town of 1000 wealthy people who set up a speed trap in their 0.5 mile town in the middle of Wichita KS and who apparently doesn't want to pay for their own police protection - I have never before visited nor knew the town existed and the cop flipped out that I was driving so 'dangerously' pass their huge precious green manicured lawns). Oddly enough, pass both ends of the town, the speed limit is 40 mph.

Anyways, I am sticking with State Farm.

A good thing to do if you are unsure of how good insurance companies are at paying is by contacting someone at an auto repair shop. My father-n-law is the part time accountant of an auto body shop in OK and says that Geico and progressive are pretty lousy at paying claims, but Allstate, Farmers, and State Farm are pretty good.
