I am a new Prius owner and would like to use my old Yakima roof rack. I have Q towers and I can not get them to fit tightly. I used to use them just fine on a Rav4. The lip angle from the roof seems to cause them to slip. Is there not a tower that would fit into the rain gutter on the roof. Yakima has rain gutter towers that fit in to a gutter that is different that a Prius'. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Gaelyn
You cannot use the same clips and pads from the Rav for your Prius. Get the correct clips and pads, and you'll be in fine shape. You need the 124 clips, and they'll fit just fine. Here's my car with them. http://evnut.com/prius_racks.htm
each vehicle requires different and specific Q clips. the ones for your Rav4 do not/will not/should not be used on a Prius. for $60, that rack will fit perfectly on the prius. this link has a bunch of Prius' with racks. good luck. http://www.backcountryracks.com/index.aspx...r_rack_installs <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Gaelyn @ Mar 4 2007, 09:06 PM) </div>
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(darelldd @ Mar 4 2007, 10:55 PM) </div> Where did you get the Saris system? And would you say that net net it is an easier system to install, put on, take off, etc.? Thanks!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(darelldd @ Mar 4 2007, 10:55 PM) </div> I have looked at using my old Q-Towers on my '07 Prius. Yakima says you need a set of Q5 Clips and a set of Q124 Clips. to mount them. I'm not sure which of these go on the front and which on the rear though. I haven't bought clips yet, since the rack blistered the paint under the mounting pad area on my old car.
I just put a Yakima rack on my Prius. The Q5 clips go on the front, and the Q124 clips attach to the rear. ...How old is your rack? Mine was 1-2 years old and off of my old VW GTI. The Q Towers from that year work fine with the right clips. What I was told is that previous Yakima guides recommended Q124 clips all around. The current ones recommend the Q5/Q124 split. Both apparently work fine, based on the responses I read on this board.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(awai08 @ Aug 27 2007, 11:58 PM) </div> You'll evidently need the Q5 clips in the front. I had the Q124 all around and had to dismantle my rack half way to Colorado back in August. The rack wouldn't hold two bikes at highway speeds securely. I've used Yakima products for over 16 years with zero problems until this issue. I've been waiting for the Q5 clips to arrive for 5 weeks.
I have the same problem with q-tower installation on a '14 Prius V. The rear clips work just fine but the front will not grip when tightening the assembly down. The clips just slip off of the roof lip angle. Yakima tells me that can't happen. I will send them a picture of the problem tomorrow. I just can't get any help from Yakima. Make sure that you are using the correct Q-Clips for your Prius. Mine takes a Q99 in front and a Q131 in the rear. This is for the Prius V.
Just a heads up, you might get a better response in the Gen3 forums as this is a Gen2 forum area. I have a Gen2 with Q towers, 48" bars and used Q124 clips all the way around even tho Yakima says use Q5 in the front and Q124 in the back - this was based of the response of other users having fitment issues as well with the two different clips. Even to date, Yakima says use the following on a Gen2 2004-2009 Q Towers 4 Pack 58" CrossBar Pair (2 CrossBars) Q5 Clips (front) Q124 Clips (rear)
I have the same exact problem on the same car that you have. The front with Q99 clip will not grip despite several attempts trying to make it work. I spent at least 3 hours following the troubleshooting guides that came with the clip but no luck. The last time I thought I got it but the whole assembly just slip off. Sounds like you didn't get much help from Yakima. Have you tried different size clip or have you had a solution for it?
so, on a 2014 prius I should use the Q124 clips all around instead of Q5 in the front? Thanks for your comments.
Yup, Q124 all around. First time it took two people to secure it. Now i can do it myself with no problems.
