Can it be too hot for A/C to work?

A few weeks ago in 90+ degree temps, my A/C compressor stopped working and was blowing hot air in the cabin. As I continued to drive closer to the coast and the temperature dropped slightly, the A/C compressor started to work again. Is the Prius supposed to operate this way or should I get my A/C checked out?

It's possible the compressor iced up from being run too long. How long was it on for? Was it high humidity?

It had been parked for about an hour in the sun. When I started it up, the A/C compressor did not function until quite some time later in the drive. The humidity level was low.

Sounds like a problem. Mine worked fine through three >100F summers.

Ugh. It happened again yesterday. Temps in the 80's for the evening commute. A/C started out nice and cold. Hit bumper to bumper traffic and the A/C compressor stopped working... blowing hot air into the cabin. As the flow of traffic sped up and I got in slighter cooler outside temps, the A/C compressor started working again and the cabin cooled down. <sigh> Guess I gotta have it checked out.

This is not how the AC is supposed to work, have it checked

Well, I do spot something that you may want to check out before getting your AC looked at. You seem to point out that the AC doesn't work so well in bumper to bumper traffic. I think that the airflow has something to do with it. I don't think that's your entire problem though, as even standing still it shouldn't blow hot air, but it does seem that it's related. Could be because in traffic your engine is off, using the electric one doesn't seem to help the AC very much on my '02.

I'd look and see if you can get your AC running while your running in EV mode at like 30 MPH or so and see if it's still cool. Then bump your speed up just enough to make the engine run and see if it gets colder. More than just a slight change though, like a big difference.

I'd still get it checked out in the end though. Just think you might want to try that first. If that doesn't really have an affect then you may have some electrical problem that pops up randomly.

Thanks, Alexstarfire for the tip. Yes, it seems it's the hi-temps/slow speeds/low airflow/EV mode combination when the A/C compressor stops working.

that's werid though, the prius A/C in 04 models and up its electric so its totally not dependant if the engine is on or off (on classic models though, if A/C on = engine on) , state of charge of the battery should dictate if your A/C is putting out cold air or not, have you tried using recirculate when the car is at a standstill? Its less efficent to pull in fresh air when the outside is hotter than the inside, although I understand the prius AUTO ac should handle the recir/cir mode.

Yeah, it is weird. When the A/C compressor stopped working, I've tried switching the fresh air/recirculate modes but there was no effect to the A/C compressor, i.e., it still blew hot air in the cabin.

It's broken. Get it fixed. Mine works fine sitting motionless for half-hours in Dallas summers; yours should work equally well.

take a peek where your oil filter is, you should see an A/C pipe, maybe your A/C fluid leaked out like i did

Yep. I'm taking it in the first chance I get... hopefully before the next heat wave. ;)
    Thanks for your input.

hmmm... I don't think that's what happened with my car as the A/C compressor still works in less stressful situations. Sorry to hear that's what happened with your car!

well if it's low on refrigerant, the system can handle lighter loads but not heavy loads like 90+ degree weather. go ahead and get that checked out in case you've got a leak somewhere.
