I was at CostCo gassing up. It usually shuts off between 9 and 10 gallons but I was filling up really slow. It approached 10 and I expected it to shut off any time. But I had been driving on one blinking pip and thought maybe the tank was a little lower than it usually is when I fill up. As it approached 11 I shut it off myself and when I pulled the nozzled out....backsplash and it was totally full.

    Have I ruined my bladder?

What can I do now? Do I try and siphon out the overfill?

Drive, pulse and glide, and go for a long distance - you filled it to the brim and have the opportunity for a 600 mile tank! Best of luck!

The same thing happened to me when the car was new. I filled it real slow and it blew back a good amount of gas when I pulled the nozzle. The charcoal canister will saturate when overfilling occurs. If this happens too many times you can get an error code. It also happened one time when I had the nozzle upside down while filling because I had to pull onto the opposite side of the fuel door to get to the pump. I have never seen an error code and the sprayback only happened twice. Now I always fillup fast and make sure the nozzle is in a normal position.

    good luck.

I'm not worried about the bladder; it may be that charcoal filter that got filled with gas.

But maybe you were lucky (which I hope) and nothing happened.

if you didn't see any check engine or other error lights, you're okay. just be careful in the future. no need to try to siphon out any extra gas or anything.

    Now you tell me.

Well, I really suck at it, as in I don't suck at it enough. I was too scared to really suck on it so no gas. It's already gone down into the tank anyway. God knows where it went.

    No error lights...yet.

I guess I got off safely. Rest assured I will be real careful in the future.

    Thanks for the reassurance.

that's because there's an anti siphon valve in there! ;)

the system is designed to attempt to resist a major overfill- sounds like it was a good thing you stopped it yourself though! (disclaimer to public: resist does not mean stop!)

happened to me just once and DH grumbled at me for it but it's been fine since. you'll probably end up in the same boat.

I just looked at the topic header on the main page and got a good laugh out of it... Then I realized what this really was about (and then it was not funny)...

Look up galaxee's thread posting pics of a bladderectomy hubby performed...and the price tag. You bet it wasn't funny when I thought I might have to pay to replace the entire bladder on my own dime.

Just to be clear, you didn't try to siphon by using a tube and your mouth right?? NEVER NEVER do that. Injesting gasoline is NOT healthy. I find that most of the pumps here are TOO sensitive to back pressure from the bladder. They shut off at least a gallon shy of "what I have used" based on mileage and MFD (known to be 2% or about 1 mile per gallon) higher than actual. I fill to what I know I've used.

I guess the time that one could have a problem with accidental overfilling would be when it is very hot out and the gas expands some in the bladder since the underground tank is cooler.

It's not? But isn't oil natural and gas is made from oil. The fumes are in the air we breath, so how can it not be good for us? When I get a cold I swallow one teaspoon of gasoline and it cures me right up.

    Just kidding. :)
