Last night I parked my car, pushed the power button to turn off the vehicle and climbed out forgetting to turn off my headlights. I closed the door and went to the other side of the vehicle w/o locking the doors and noticed my headlights were still on. I went back to the front door and when I opened the door the headlights turned off. Is this normal?
There are some circumstances where the headlights stay on. For example, if you turn on the headlights after turning off the car, the lights will stay on when you open the door (I think). Tom

Come to think of it I climbed out of the vehicle w/o pushign the power button (new to the car, keep forgetting to do that), reached back in, pushed the power button then walked around. I think that was it. I should test this tonight
If the headlights are on and you power off the car, then open the driver's door, the headlights go off. Any other sequence the headlights stay on. I went to a meeting with my wife. When we got there she wanted to hear the end of a radio program. I got out and went in to the meeting (car still on so she could listen). She hit the power button and came into the meeting when the radio show was over. About 20 minutes later someone asked me, "Bill, is that your Prius with the lights on?" It was. I went out, opened the driver's door, shut it, and locked the car. Fortunately, the HID lights use less power than the halogen headlights.
An especially easy foul-up is to open the driver door first, THEN power off the car. This also fits under Bill's "any other sequence" for which the lights stay on. Too bad the Smart Key System doesn't warn about excessive power drains when trying to lock the car.
