Hi- The security guard @ my work is adamant that my brake lights are not all functioning. He's been comparing my car to another Prius driver. So today he hits we with this as I'm going to lunch, so I spent the next 30 minutes looking at fuses, bulbs, etc. and all is fine. I managed to test the brake and on my 2006, I have three back lights that come on- top right & left + the center. He believes the bottom should be coming on as well when I brake. I told him those only light when the main lights of the car are active. I asked if the other driver has their light on and he says no. So what's the answer to this insane conversation? I never see the other Prius driver around. There's only two of us in a lot of 80 autos. B

The Prius brake lights are LEDs. The upper portion of the left and right housings are the brake lights, not the lower part. The lower part has regular incandescent bulbs for running lights, etc. Just ask a friend to look for you, or back your car up to a wall, put on the parking brake, put it in neutral, and then step on and off the brake pedal. You will see in the rear view mirrors when the brake lights come on, and you will be able to tell if any of the three don't. For an even better look, I have jammed a 2x4 board onto the brake pedal and then moved the driver seat forward to hold it in place. You can then go back and look at each LED yourself.
