So I got my new 2007 Prius last night, and I love it!!! However, I just called my insurance agent (Allstate) and informed them of the change. She then told me that my six month premium on the Prius is $85 HIGHER than it was on my 2005 Subaru Legacy GT!!! I was quite shocked, as I fully expected a drop. Oh well, I'm so happy with the car that it just doesn't matter right now, but I've been meaning to shop around for a new insurance company anyway. Thanks for letting me vent! Doug Proud new Prius owner
Our insurance dropped by 86 or 96 dollars a yr. dont really remember. We have state farm been there for over 20 yrs. plus have homeowners with them and multi-car discount. the EV is 112.00 a yr.
My car insurer, Amica, told me my annual insurance premium would go up $93.00 if I bought a Prius. The Prius would replace a 2001 Ford Focus.
Subaru insurance rates tend to be extremely low, which is probably why you are taking a hit. I asked an agent about it and she told me that it is mainly due to their incredibly low injury rate. My insurance went up a little vs. my 2002 Accord but only by ~$50/6mo. policy.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(qbee42 @ May 17 2007, 12:25 PM) </div> yea mine went down signifigantly from my 2001 audi s4... but thats probably cause it was an audi s4 (state farm)
According to the Insurance Institute's crashworthiness tests (http://www.iihs.org/ratings/summary.aspx?class=30) the Subaru Legacy is rated the safest midsize car available, and is rated better than the Prius (http://www.iihs.org/ratings/summary.aspx?class=40). So the increase you report is understandable. Of course, this is only crashworthiness, and doesn't take into account frequency of accidents, theft etc.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(priussoris @ May 17 2007, 12:16 PM) </div> I have been with State Farm for over 20 years with home, multi vehicle, no accidents, two adult drivers with excellent records. Is $800.00 a year excessive?
Insurance rates make no sense to me...they claim to pull everything off the VIN, but it never seems to pick out the added options to the car... My Rates went down with the Prius by more then $100 over my 2005 loaded Matrix Then my rates went up by $100 when going from a Base Sienna to a loaded Corolla
My rates went down also, but the change to a Prius might have coincided with a milestone of having been with my insurance company for 10+ years and having more than one vehicle on the policy.
My Prius rate went up $5/mo when switching from a 7 year old F250 worth about $17k, 110,000 miles... Interesting dynamic since the prius is worth about $25k if destroyed, the truck worht 17k and the premium went up 5/mo... Guess the prius rate itself must be a hair lower, but went up because of the $8k more in value they are insuring. I wonder if I call them, would my rate go up if I tell them I already have 50,000 miles on the car so it'd be worth lesser to insure, or would it go up if they knew I was driving so many miles a day?
I am paying $1052 per year on the Prius through Allstate, compared to the $880 I was paying on the Legacy. 31 year old male, married, multi-car discount, homeowner's policy, no accidents or tickets. It sounds like it's definitely time to shop! Doug
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(gaboy @ May 17 2007, 10:41 AM) </div> Age is also a factor , wife and I are both over late 40 /50's and location all goes into play.
Hi Doug, Welcome to the club bud! I got my Prius on 5/9/07 and I'm in the same boat. I have AAA and my insurance premiums went up exactly the same amount from my Toyota Corolla, 85$ extra. I was very disappointed especially since AAA quoted me it would be 3 dollars cheaper. AAA also advertises hybrid discounts on their website which ACTUALLY don't exist...they don't have hybrid discounts yet. I'm not happy with AAA at all right now. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(dsmithpdx @ May 17 2007, 11:03 AM) </div>
I have my insurance with State Farm and it dropped $120 dollars per year from my 2002 Malibu to the 07 Prius. The agent stated the reason being the Prius was a much safer car than the Malibu.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(gaboy @ May 17 2007, 09:08 AM) </div> That's about what I pay for my '05 with State Farm. Dave M.
My insurance went down when I got the Prius... I have alstate and went from a 2door coupe gt v6 @ 188 a month (2200 yearly) to 68 monthly (800ish yearly) i
Don't forget that where you live has a lot to do with insurance rates. When I lived in Vegas I paid about $1200 a year, I moved to Wisconsin and my insurance dropped in half.
