I'm planning to purchase my '07 Prius very soon. I visited my local dealer and took a test ride. Regarding the Smart Key. The dealer took a small square "transponder" and inserted it in the dash. We have a new Lexus and of course the transponder for the Lexus stays in my pocket. I asked him about the Prius and he said that's the way it works.
I find it hard to believe and I will appreciate the correct information from you guys (gals).
Don't remember what package this car had but I think it was #2.
Anyways Prius with #5 package including mats - all dealer fees paid - 24648 + tax.
    Thanks, Don Naples Florida

The transponder can stay in your pocket at all times!

First, you can't keep it in your pocket unless it has smart ignition. So the car has to come equiped. It may be your dealer was simply a numbnut. They are out there, those who don't necessarily know.

Yeah, it wouldn't be a very "smart" key if you still had to put it in the dash. SKS is really the greatest car feature since wheels.

Just checked the Toyota web site. For the 2007 Prius the smart key system (that can stay in your pocket at all times) is available in all packages (starting at package #2)

In earlier years the Prius base packages didn't have SKS and you had to stick the fob in the slot like the dealer showed you.

    TGFG (thank god for google)

I didn't think it was possible to buy a Smart Key System without Smart Ignition?!

Just do what you've been doing with your Lexus. The ignition slot is there in case your battery does in the fob.

Yeah, there are non-SKS equipped Priuses. You unlock/lock with the fob and insert the fob into the dash.

MY Smart Key Problem - Help

As I left the car, I pushed the driver's door outside door lock. It's always worked before. Not this time. It just rang a siren. And my car doors did not lock. Tried this 3 times. Please advise.

Sorry I made this part of a reply post; just can't figure out how to post a NEW question.

    Thanks

    Hi Nicole,

The Prius won't let you lock the doors (electronically) with the key inside, or if you left the car turned on. Perhaps you have another copy in there, or you forgot to turn it off?

A workaround: use the little mechanical key on the side of the fob if you really need to lock the door when the car won't let you.

    Paul.

Either a door is not closed all the way (probably the hatch), or another Smart Key Fob is in the car.

On the times you want to lock a smart key fob in the car (like when my wife leaves her purse in my car when we go into a resturant), then you need to use the lock button on the Fob that you are taking with you. Also, to unlock the car, you must press the unlock button on the Fob that is with you. Touching the door handle wont work if a fob is locked in the car.

Or press the lock button of the fob you are taking with you.

Yes it was the hatch (tho I did check this before -- guess I just need to slam it harder.
Thanks Paul and Martin!! Still have trouble figuring out how to post a new query or answering on this website.

No need to slam hard. Start it down by pulling on the internal handhold on the right side. As it comes down, push against the Toyota emblem in the center (some prefer the license plate) until the hatch closes. It takes very little force this way.

I pushed the hatch shut this weekend while shopping and locked it. I then realized I locked my pockebook with the fob in it. I started to panic, you know, that sinking feeling in your stomach. I thought, I'll call my husband, oh no, the phone is in the pocketbook. I took a deep breath and realized, hey, I'm 3 feet from the SKS, so I put my hand on latch and heard those sweet beeps as I opened it. I love the SKS. :)
