Help, clock fell backwards into the hole!

    I've got 42K miles on my 2006 Prius ... so far except for the rattles all is well ... but I noticed that my clock has fallen backwards into the hole! I guess the plastic clips lost a little tension.

    Anyways, I'm not sure how to get the clock back into its proper slot. I think I have two options:

    1) Push back into position from behind.

    I'd love to be able to do this but I don't really have any access behind the clock. I took the center
    speaker above the NAV system out but there's just so much metal and stuff in the way that I really can't
    get my hand anywhere near the clock slot. I tried popping out the hazard/odo-reset/liters button to try
    and squeeze my fingers in the hole adjacent to the clock hole, except that the wire that plugs into the
    hazard/odo-reset/liters button has about only 1/8" slack; I cannot pull the hazard/odo-reset/liters button
    out far enough to unclip the wire and hence get my hands in the hole that the hazard/odo-reset/liters
    button sits!

    2) Pull the clock out and put it back into the hole from the front.

    I have no idea how to do this. I can't pull the clock out through the center speaker above the NAV
    system because there's too much structural metal in the way. Neither can I pull the clock out of the hole
    in which it normally sits because its too big .... I don't think it was meant to come out of its hole
    in reverse.

    Can anyone provide some guidance here? I was looking for an FAQ or post that shows how one takes
    apart this dash area near the clock ... to no avail.

    I believe to get behind that part of the dash, you have to disassemble everything to the left of it as well... It might be a little bit of a pain, but I bet you can do it. There's some dash disassembly info on this page: http://web.mac.com/gagix/iWeb/PriusMods/EVButton.html but I don't think it covers all the way to the clock area. There might be a more complete tutorial for dash disassembly/reassembly floating around somewhere though.

    I'm puzzled here :huh: ......this is a 2006 so it is under warranty right?

    I say it is Toyota's problem not yours, right?.....ooops I see 42K miles! Wow you drive a lot!

    This is so off the wall that I wouldn't be surprised if dealers have some trick for doing this without dash disassembly, for little or no charge. Doesn't hurt to ask.

    You probably have to pull the MFD, since the clock is mounted in its
    bezel. To do that, you need to pull both inner vent panels. To get
    the one containing the shifter and the park button, you have to at
    least partially pop off the lower and upper drivers' side dash
    panels, which isn't all that hard -- see this for initial guidelines
    as well as the other references noted here, and be confident that
    the panels really do just pull straight off [use a "braced" position
    so you don't pull too far] with clips designed not to break off.
    .
    Once you've uprooted the MFD, you can probably access the clock
    part from the back. Take pictures, write it up!

    Folks, thanks for all your help, everyone. I took apart 6 dash panels and pulled out the MFD. I snapped the clock back in from the REAR. It cannot go in from the front. Thanks to all, the whole process, including disassembly and re-assembly, took no more than 45 minutes. This is the easiest interior that I've ever worked on!
