I put my foot on brake and count to a slow 3 , then press start. The Video Screen lights up to the Info Screen, but the Instrument panel stays dark, and the car does not start. This has happened twice. First time I thought it was something I did. Now I am not so sure.
I don't think you're depressing the brake pedal far enough for the car to register your foot is on it. What color is the light in the POWER button when you are in this "problem" mode? What happens if you press the POWER button a second time?

We assume you don't get the ready button to light up? What if you press the power button without your foot on the pedal? Does it behave as it should?
Listen carefully when you apply the brake pedal. You should hear clicks, maybe the brake accumulator pump run, and a very subtle high-pitched whine out of the solenoid drivers. If you're parked near a wall to the rear, look for brake-light glow on it. If your brake switch is flakey, you'll want to do something about it.. . _H*
This has been happening to me for a few months now. There is no discernable pattern of when it will start, or won't. It is intermittent. I depress the brake pedal the same depth each time, so I don't think the problem is how hard I am on the brake. When I press the power button a second time, it starts up normally. I've taken it in once already, and they weren't able to duplicate my problem, or resolve it.

The only thing I have noticed, is the small control screen lights right up but nothing else happens. My car is a week or so old 2007. I will watch this and take it in as soon as I can. I have never hit the power button without pressing the brake - I did not think you were supposed to.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(priusmaybe @ May 12 2007, 03:15 AM) </div> You have to hit the power WITHOUT the brake depressed if you want to get it in to accessory or IG-On mode if you wanted to do something like listen to the radio without starting the car. Depressing the brake WITH the power button puts it into ready mode... so that it's ready to drive. When I first got the car, my wife always had trouble getting it started while I never did.
Sorry I meant the ready *light* coming on. But can you get to the IG-On mode? Try it it won't hurt the car. If everything on the IG-On mode is functional (all dashboard lights, touchscreen etc) then like hobbit said it could be something with your brake pedal.
Hi Priusmaybe Several comments have touched on the brake light switch as a possible problem. If that switch is not properly adjusted and making good contact, your Prius will not start in the usual, normal fashion. You might try having someone take a look at the brake lights while you depress the brake pedal to see how much pressure you must exert for the switch to make contact, and also to confirm that contact is indeed being made.. I see you have a 2007 Prius. Couple of years ago, the Prius brake light switches were recalled due to oxidation of the contacts resulting is poor or no contact. On my previous Prius (2004), Toyota replaced the brake light switch under warranty. Let the forum know what happens. CIAO
