All Prii are made in Japan. (At present). If he swears his was made in the western U.S. he's either lieing or he doesn't own a Prius and doesn't know what he's talking about. Either way, I wouldn't give anything he says any weight.
All Prius are made in Japan except for China market. http://priuschat.com/index.php?showtopic=19732&hl= Ken@Japan
If the VIN starts w/a J, it's made in Japan. All US Priuses are currently made in Japan. Toyota also doesn't have any auto manufacturing plants in Oregon. The only one in the west coast is the NUMMI plant in Fremont, CA but no Priuses are built there. http://www.nummi.com/vehicles.php lists what they make.
I guess I was too subtle with the J. Many Toyotas are imported through the Port of Portland, Portland, Oregon, but that's just their entry point into the US market.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(priusmaybe @ May 7 2007, 10:46 PM) </div> I think what they saw was the arrival port listed on the window sticker. All Prii are born in beautiful Toyota City, Aichi prefecture of Japan. Many, if not all Prii then arrive in the U.S. at the Portland Oregon vehicle port off of large ships that carry the baby Prii safely from the homeland. The first Camry hybrids that were sold in America were also made in Japan, but now the U.S. production has started making the hybrids as well. I recommend sticking with the J-vin cars personally!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(toyotablackbox @ May 8 2007, 12:34 AM) </div> I don't think that has anything to do with quality. The Toyotas built in this country have excellent quality ratings. I heard somewhere that american built camrys are more reliable than those built in Japan. Don't know if it's true or not but it's believable.
Since literally anybody can write anything they want to, if something posted sounds suspicious, it probably is. I would NOT trust sites like these for big-ticket items like cars.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(tripp @ May 8 2007, 03:03 AM) </div> Actually I've been reading several reports to the contrary on this. Not necessarily on reliablity, but build quality seems to be of a lesser standard in the US. I personally was thrilled to go back to a 'J' vin As for the OP I'm sure he was referring to the port of entry, not the actual place it was built. In the east vehicles arrive in NJ, in the west OR seems to be the POE.
A buddy of mine and I were poking round the Prius and he said:" This car is clearly built by robots. Look how perfect the welds are". Nice
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(toyotablackbox @ May 7 2007, 11:34 PM) </div> They're made at the Tsutsumi Plant, the same plant as the Camry.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Tideland Prius @ May 8 2007, 11:00 PM) </div> OMG I sure hope they are made in Japan. I am an American and by default I am in imbecile. Long live Japan and keep making the Prius there! @ Ken: please tell the Prius maker: Thank you for such a wonderful car!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(priusFTW @ May 8 2007, 08:14 PM) </div> just check your VIN. The first letter is "J", that's all you need to know
