I was coming back from a short business trip last night and was running low on gas. I probably would have made it but since I was stopping for a dinner break I figured I might as well fuel up. While looking for a dinner spot I passed up a gas station with a $3.39 price tag. I shouldn't have. After I got dinner and pulled into the nearest station and looked at the pump it was $3.54... The weirdest thing was. I went into the station with two pips showing. Since the price was so high I decided to only put in $10.- of gas. That should have been almost 3 gallons. But when I got back onto the freeway I noticed I was still at 2 pips. How weird. It never moved up. I figured it should have gone to at least half a tank at that point. What gives? How come the gauge didn't change?
Common problem it seems ... people on here call it the "guess guage" rather than gas guage. Run a search ...
It usually take more than 3 for the gauge to register a change. Don't worry about it. If you don't fill up all the way your last 2 pips will just stay on longer.
From what I have read if you put in 3 gallons or less the 'guess gauge' will not register it. Since at $10 you were close to 3 gallons but not quite there this is probably the case..
That is what I figured. But it was sure weird. You would think the gasgauge works with a float level and it should have indicated a higher level of fuel. But I guess that is how it works. I know the gauge is a bit funky but I haven't had any trouble with it since I ran out of gas on the first tank. Now I usually just get gas the second it starts blinking. BTW, I just pulled the trim rings off. Wow it does look better.
man, for a moment, I thought the title said "got some sex last night." But then again, for the car, gas is like sex huh. Cant drive without it, and cant stand the high price.
Yeah, the gage is funky at best. Scares the heck out of me when I travel in unknown lands. At two pips you might have a gallon, you might have five gallons. My "range" when I don't know where the next station is turns out to be no better than about 300 miles since I'm too chicken. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Tony_Min @ May 5 2007, 01:00 PM) </div> Good for you! I never fill up at the cheap stations. Sometimes it takes me a while, but I eventually find the most expensive one, and keep going there whenever possible. Expensive gas = more Prii. Cheap gas = more Hummers.

Yup. I did my first ever fillup yesterday, and was shocked at the current sticker price of gas. (its been longer than usual since my last fill, hehe). 3.60 regular 3.72 mid 3.84 premium Insane. Anyway. First fillup on my Prius. I got about 420 miles on that first tank out of the dealer, and put gas in right after I got down to 1 blinking pip. I was able to get just over 10 gallons into the tank before it clicked off the first time, and I figured I would leave it at that. the 10 gallons brought my gauge all the way back to full.
