...and 1st tank mileage (based on manual calculations) is 41.072 MPG. That's based on 386.2 miles driven and 9.403 gallons purchased. Now if only I could find a way to consistently fill up, it would make all this more precise!

Anyways, 41 miles per gallon combined is quite good, I think. I'm very satisfied at the results, especially since the last car my wife and I had averaged, at best, 22 mpg combined. Now to go read more about the pulse and glide modes...

One thing I can't help but wonder, though...

Why do the big media groups consistently pick on the Prius and it's mileage? Even if it doesn't deliver lab-test mileage, I still think that it's very good. It's a lot better than any other car I've ever owned!

I'm glad you're happy with it nd not freaking out over the milage like a lot of new buyers do.

    Look at it this way:

    41mpg over 10,000 miles = 244gallons * $3.20/per gallon = $780.80

    47mpg over 10,000 miles = 213gallons * $3.20/per gallon = $680.85
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------............
    $99.95

So I wouldn't stress too much on the milage. Once you get into the 40s+ the difference is much smaller.

Just wait it gets better. My last tank calced out to just over 50 MPG, mostly highway miles. My daily drive consists of 80% 55+ MPH with hills. This was my 4th tank of gas since I got the car April 1. I have over 1600 on it so far.

Ok, had a story written, but I accidentally closed the freakin window, so I'm not gonna type it over.

Basically I get 60.3 MPG ATM, though it should be higher. Stupid AC. I'm running an '02 model though, so I say it's damn good. I do basically all city driving though. Highway doesn't save much time since I only usually go about 5 miles on it, if that. Some places do require highway use, so if I get on I usually do close-in drafting of semis.

The mileage will get better as you put more miles on your car.

41 miles per gallon in the city or highway?

either way, most cars don't get 41 nowadays. so that is a good point.

but, when u sell something and u claim it gets 51/61, i believe u should deliver on your specs.

They are required to test according to EPA procedures just like every other manufacture.

As F8L suggests, these are not Toyota's specs, nor do they "claim" them. Toyota, like all car manufacturers, simply cites the results from the government's tests, with the caveat YMMV.

They do get the EPS rated numbers. but you need to use cruise control on the stretches that dont have stop lights. usually about 5 to 10 mph below the limit.

    55mph usually works

the use pulse and glide in the city where frequent stops are common.
The sweet spot for this is 30 - 40 mph

    You see it climb!

I am getting 65 mpg on my 25 mile commute!!!

I've heard this quite a bit and my response is 'Check out the many posts on this site' there have been many comments about the EPA testing and how its flawed in general, but especially with the Prius.

This being said many on here are exceeding those numbers....heck my second tank was 55.1 combined thanks to the infomation listed on here. Now its closer to 60. Moral of the story is if your happy with the 41, hey its a great number compared to before, but there certainly is room to bring it even higher!

I just fill up my 1st tank, the fuel gauge still had 3 bars but I figure what the heck just fill up since gas prices have been going up almost everyday. Anyways I had 325 miles and put in 7.1 gallons to fill it up, so thats 45.8 miles per gallon at 3.239 a gallon it cost me $23.00. It felt great since I use to own a 03 Toyota Sequoia Limited and would have spend around $65.00 on gas to get around the same mileage on a tank of gas.

I just filled my first tank about 8 gallons. Computed mpg are 48.1 highway between 65 and 75mph with cruise control at all times and A/C set to AUTO and 76 degrees F.

looking forward to improvements and to check results in a more mixed trip.

$23 instead of $55 my 94 V6 Camry would have cost

I bought my 07' prius on 3/14/07. My first tankfull was 50.7 mpg. I drive 82 miles round trip to work 5 days a week plus lots of weekend driving. I do 50/50 hiway/city driving and my wife does 40% of the driving. So far we have put almost 6000 miles on the odometer. To date our worst tank was 48.7 mpg (that was with 4 adults, 2 coolers, lots of food and supplies for an all day trip of about 450miles) our best tank was 58.6 mpg. This is our first hybrid and all we have ever owned is sports cars (lots of mustangs and corvettes) so the milage is very impressive. I have been milking my cars for their best mileage for years, our last car a 2001 Z06 corvette got just over 30 mpg when driven properly. I have been drafting since I was a teenager on a sportbike (many years ago) and doing the pulse and glide almost as long (although I had never heard the term before finding this forum). If everyone would just pay attention to their driving habits they could get over 50mpg in their prius right of the start. Treat your accelerator pedal like a marshmellow and watch the mileage climb!

By the way, can anyone tell me how much their mileage has improved after installing the coastal ev kit?
I am very interested in installing it in mine.

Yeah, don't forget about the bladder.

The EV mode may actually bring your mileage down if you're not careful. Remember, unless you have a plug-in Prius, recharging comes from the ICE (except the amount you get from regenerative braking).

I just filled our first tank. 51.9 by mfd, 51.86 by calculation. 450 miles down to one tick on the gauge. Can't really complain. (I do about 2-3 mpg better than my wife. We are turning it into a contest,,,,I did better than you!)

As you'll figure out by reading many of the discussions here, calculating individual tank stats is notoriously unreliable due to the nature of the fuel bladder.

Here's an interesting experiment: For each tank, keep track of your miles traveled and the MFD average mileage. Divide the miles traveled by the average mileage to determine (approximately) how much fuel you burned. (I say approximately because the MFD has some margin of error.) Compare that value to how much fuel you pumped in and over time you'll see a pretty good indication of how refueling levels fluctuate.

As a side benefit, if you track your history carefully enough, you'll also get a better feel for how much gas is in the tank and hence whether you can safely push the envelope a bit...or so the theory goes. For example, if you went 400 miles on a recent tank and your tracking shows you started the current tank with a gallon more than that 400-mile tank, you can expect to have a few more miles' range before reaching that same end-of-tank fuel level again (assuming you maintain a similar average MPG).

It's all part of the fun of driving a Prius!

My new 07 is now on the last three bars of fuel from the full tank that came from the dealer. I have been averaging about 40 MPG. Not bad considering a lot of short trips with cold weather starts. Question, how consistant is the gas gauge? Or more exactly, does each of the 10 bars represent 1/10th of the tank? If I have three bars showing, does that mean I have 30% of the tank remaining? My new prius replaced a 99 Celica. Celicas have a conical gas tank. The bottom half of the gauge represented less gas. Just trying not to run out of gas before my first fill up.

Also...I see people linking to mileage charts. Are there any online mileage logs/charts that we can use instead of creating our own excel sheet?

CleanMPG and GreenHybrid both have them. Click the banners in my sig and it will take you to my logs in either.

EPA gives the ratings not Toyota (or any other manufacturer for that matter).

I just filled my first tank and got 55 MPG coincidentally enough that is what the EPA rates the prius at.

I have to say, I'm very satisfied with the performance of this car's efficiency.

(And it takes some training for the driver. I've found that driving this car is unlike any other I have driven in order to maximize FE)

Also Note** once EPA ratings become more "realistic" (2009 I believe???) this generation Prius is expected to have an EPA rating of 48 MPG combined instead of the 55 MPG combined it is rated at now
