I have been using my foglights when driving on the highway...or at least I thought I had been. When I stopped and put the car in park and stepped out for a sec (I was not on the highway at the time  ) to check what was actually on, I didn't see any lights on. Where are the fog lights? Do I have to turn on something besides that inner light twisty band (technical term) to turn them on? I am confused (and obviously not an automotive expert).
You have to have the lights on for the fog lights to work. You can't use the fog lights without the regular lights.
Does anyone have any feedback on how well the fog lights work? I've found it difficult to gauge how well they will illuminate since they only come on with the main headlights. I also have yet to encounter any major fog since getting my Prius.
Ah, they look nice from the outside.... Honestly, I don't think they're very functional. Maybe a slight improvement in near illumination in denser fog, but it's really minimal.
They are carefully focused "driving" lights, not actual "fog" lights. In other words, they are more for the sake of others being able to see you better (and a bit of vanity) rather than improving the driver's visibility... except for those of us in the north, where the added layer of winter mess from sand & salt reduces the brightness of all lights. Having an extra set is quite helpful then.
I've heard John state that claim before, but, as yet, have not seen any documentation confirming it. But as limited functionality as they have as true 'fog lights' it's reasonable that that is the purpose they serve--intended or not.
So, has anybody found out about the hack to turn the fog lights on without the head lights? I think it would be a good alternative to DRL. Or is it really against the law to do this mod? I'll check the diagram, though. Tosh Salsa Red BC San Diego, CA
I did find them useful last winter when it was snowing. I had to pick my son up at work after dark and was going very slowly due to the snow--hardly anyone else on the road. I switched on the fog lights and could really see the road much better.
>So, has anybody found out about the hack to >turn the fog lights on without the head lights? The simplest thing would be to unplug them from the wiring harness and run your own wiring that you can turn on and off as you please. >I think it would be a good alternative to DRL. >Or is it really against the law to do this mod? You can buy fog lights in any car parts store. In my state you are expected to mount them in pairs that match each other on the left and right. You also have to have them no higher up than the hood (unless you have a plow blade up there)
What I've found with the Prius fog light is they help light the fog line, the yellow line on the shoulder of the road, right and left on a divided hiway. As for any other major benifit I've yet to see it. We have DRL's here.
Well, that is the point of frog lights, after all - to illuminate the road when it's foggy, without all the nasty scatter you get from headlights. What I find strange about the Prius frog lights is that you can only put the rear ones on once the front ones are turned on. I can see how this is good to reduce the number of idiots blinding us with their rears all the time, but I'm worried that this will have the opposite effect - if your fronts are lighting the road, you might assume your rears are on too. Particularly if you're used to a car like my previous one, which wouldn't let the front ones on unless you had some rear light (tails or frogs) showing.
Rear fog lights? Must be a European thing. I don't think my car has anything other than normal rear lights.
Um, well, ah, yes! At least once a year over here there'll be a news blurb about multi-car pile ups. These usually occur in area where there is dense fog.
And idiots that think that think driving 100 feet per second when they can't see 50 feet ahead is reasonable.
Who like the DRL??? I dont, I uses to own VW and I remove DRL relay as soon as I got car... and I put back on druing snow season.... Toyota should put DRL on/off switch... I heard Camery has DRL on/off switch Has anyone look'n to the Fog light Relay? or Is it wiring or swich is different from Japanese market Prius?
