I think this is the first post on this product... but...

The Infill G4 (http://www.infill.co.kr/product/g4_style.asp) is an in dash double DIN CarPC that replaces the Prius OEM radio. I personally think they hit the sweetspot of in-dash design. This is now the benchmark to beat.

Pricey. It is being sold here for $2200:
    http://www.hipepc.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp...p;idproduct=682
    http://store.mp3car.com/Mp3Car_Infill_G4_p...k_p/sdk-014.htm

(includes GPS but still need to buy dongles: OBD, bluetooth, Wifi, microphone, connector to car's antenna)

What do Prius folk think? Is this installation possible in the Prius electronically? How about face-plate kits to mate the G4 to the dash? I think the steering wheel controls become useless, but how about the 'audio' portion of the MFD?

    Cheers,
    -Joe

It's been awhile, but I vaguely remember that the stock radio is closely tied in with the MFD. You'll definitely lose audio control with the steering wheel, as well as the MFD. Most of the beeps come from the headunit as well, but I never missed that :)

Thanks Presto. I found a hack that is meant to ensure that the climate controls keep working once the original radio is removed.

(page 4) but no word on the radio controls.

In case anyone is interested, I found out that Metra Electronics (the people who make the dash kit and discovered the climate system hack) have confirmed that the dash kit and hack work with the 2006 model Prius.

Further investigation lead me to one of their websites www.axxessinterface.com where if you dig around you find this item which looks like the TVandNav2Go video adapter:

    http://retailer.installationexcellence.com...;productid=8915

as well as this unit which will allow you to retain use of your steeringwheel radio buttons:

So it now seems that there are now no disadvantages for replacing the OEM radio except for price?

    Cheers,
    -Joe

    Joe,

Nice find on the Metra stuff, and the climate control bypass. To cut down on costs, you could piece together your own carPC. Mine was done for less than $600 CDN which included the touchscreen, mobo, wifi, gps, and psu.

Not bad. Being a stickler for the in-dash screen is a real achilles heel. (I don't even like those slide-out in dash screens... when will I learn!! :( )

A ) If I went the route of using the MFD via GVIF adapter and a bluetooth trackball as user interface, then in CDN I am looking at:

$1340 (macmini & gvif adapter & carnetix powersupply)
$674 (GPS, keyboard, mic, trackball, OBD connector, rear view camera, Car2PC connector for audio in)

    B ) If I installed a second in-dash touchscreen then I am looking at:

    $1800 (the iDotPC)
$584 (GPS, wifi, bluetooth, keyboard, mic, OBD & rear view camera)
$? for the steering wheel button control module

A gives me a better computer & easier to reverse installation, B gives me a better user interface (large touchscreen).

I am consoled somewhat by the fact that this will be cheaper than had I chosen the $7500CDN package which included NAV, camera & bluetooth.

BTW presto, where did you put the case for the PC?

There are so many in-dash flip-out solutions, but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do ;)

I stashed the computer under the driver's seat (non-nav package). I have yet to make an enclosure for it, but my goal is this summer :).
