I believe you have to jump start the car to get it to shift to N.

While we wait for Toyota to call and tell us what's wrong with our car, here is what I know after talking with two different tow drivers yesterday.

Not all tow trucks are equipped with dollies. The second driver told me that his usual truck is equipped with something called "lowjacks", but he could not have moved the car (towed backwards onto the hoist) with them.

The moral of this story is if you ever have a problem that freezes your transmission, and you have to call for a tow, insist on a truck with dollies, not lowjacks.
