When I turn the heater/AC Off, air (at whatever temperature had been set) continues to come out of the vents. The service dept at the dealer says it is supposed to work that way. But for 3 years I do not remember this happening. This is a new issue. I don't want to have to close the vents or otherwise fuss with them. When the Heater/AC is turned Off, it should be Off. No more air blowing. Does anyone know about this issue? Thanks.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(sheilac @ Apr 11 2007, 07:56 PM) </div> First, go into your AC screen and make sure the fan is off. The air coming through with the system off is outside air. The only way to close the system completely would be to hit the recirc button. I don't recommend that because your windshield is liable to fog up. I've found that 95% of the time the Auto/AC button works great for me. Dave
Thanks Dave. I will look at the fan, but not sure where to look, it only shows low to high. When I press Off, air comes out at whatever temperature had last been set, hot or cool. If the air is hot air, then it can't only be outside air coming in. If the weather is fine and no risk of fogging up the windshield, maybe I can stop this by pressing the re-circ air button before I press the Off button. I just cannot recall having this problem for the last three years. It is a new issue. If this is how it works, then I am surprised that I never noticed it before because it is really annoying to have air blowing on you when you pressed Off. - thanks. - sheila
I also noticed that when everything is switched off I get mildly warm air inside when driving in cold air conditions. To overcome this I set temperature to lowest possible level before pressing "off" button - after this it seems I get air with more or less outside temp. - Piotr
Yes, that's right Piotr. The air conditioning system will supply heat if the outside air is cooler than the cabin temperature you have chosen, so for no heat, choose the coldest setting. I presume you have the AC compressor turned off. This is the setting you use for Vent in other cars. You can manually select the fan speed. For no outside air, turn it for cold, turn off the fan, and choose recirculate. The last choice closes a door behind the lower glove box and prevents outside air from entering the cabin. Sheilac, the controls are accessed by pressing the Climate bezel button next to the screen and then the on-screen buttons for the functions you want. Welcome to PriusChat!

I agree it should be none if off is off our dealer said it was normal but does not have explanation. so we just close the vents manually. but I understand what you are saying
I've never had a car that didn't do this to some degree. The air intake is located in an area of relatively high pressure when you drive down the road. If that pressure is higher than the cabin pressure you will get some flow through the vents. Either hit recirc to stop the flow or set the cabin temp appropriately so that the air flows in at a comfortable temperature. There is nothing wrong with your car.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(brick @ Apr 13 2007, 05:37 AM) </div> I am only comparing this to the last couple vehicles we had jeep 1995 and 1998 quad cab dodge 4x4 v10 engine gas guzzler and then some.. they had no air from the vents when Off , the prius will blow out a match if in front of a vent when the controls are set to "off" somehow that does not seem normal and the FAN is off whole system OFF just driving you will get air blowing in if it is cold out you get cold if warm out you get warm it is like the old style vent on cars but it does not stop, generally on a normal car with a vent function you slide the control to OFF and it is then off except for old style ford p/u but another story.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(priussoris @ Apr 13 2007, 07:49 AM) </div> As brick said, if you don't like the "vent" behavior, then just hit the "recirc" button. That closes the outside air ducts. Turning the fan off and recirc on is roughly equivalent to what would happen in normal cars when you slide the control to OFF. Fan off and recirc off is roughly equivalent to the "Vent" function of normal cars.

i almost always have it on recirc because it helps to keep out other car's exhaust. granted not perfect, but i frequently smell exhaust if i forget to flip it over. i hate that "fresh air" is the default and recirc needs to be activated every time the car is turned on. anyone know of a method that would go to recirc on startup as a default setting?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(DaveinOlyWA @ Apr 13 2007, 06:56 AM) </div> Nope. I leave recirc off when on the highway, but definitely could use it on at times in the city. Unfortunately, by the time I get it turned back on, I've already sucked in the fumes. Dave M.
