Prius was just 2weeks old and got hit =(

Why be sad? You'll get it fixed, and it'll be fine.

Reserve being sad for "Someone hit my car, and injured me/my family".

 

I'd be interested in the average collisions per person per year now versus 1970.

Just can't help but to think it's happening more often these days.

I almost got sideswiped a week after getting mine from a distracted cell phone driver.

Yeah, but when you have something that's brand new, it's really irritating and frustrating when someone spoils it because of their stupidity. Besides, any repaired car has the potential for lost value. I had an "aw, DAMN" years ago when the bumper of my '91 Camry had the bumper sideswiped when it was only a week old. Fortunately, there was a witness and I was able to get it repaired at no cost to me. I sure felt bad about it, though.

I'm so sorry. I'm one of them too...less than two weeks old and >200 miles on the ODO and the side got smashed in! It's not driveable--steering linkage broken, suspension arms bent and body parts rubbing on the front tire. It really hurts a lot in the beginning--I was an emotional wreck. Later I started to realize it could have been a lot worse and I can be thankful that there weren't any injuries. I'm starting to realize that out of all the things that can happen to someone, relatively speaking, having your 2 week old car towed to the shop isn't all that bad...human injury and loss of life not to mention so many other things humans can be plagued with are sooo much worse. I'm feeling a little better now.

Before long, this will just be a small thing of the past for both of us, I'm sure.

He should have been driving a prius. Seriously anyone else just love the turning radius on the prius I do.

Glad no one was hurt.

That cant be fun having a brand I mean brand new car ran into by a complete idiot.

Yeah, if you do a dumb thing like smash your side mirror off, it's expensive to fix. But it is fixable. Yes, the expense is an aggravation--but I'd hope that anyone who owns a car is able to handle unexpected expenses like that. ALL cars are nothing but an expense, and ALL cars--new or old--are liable to bring the owners an unexpected expense, even a big one (no matter how new the car).

We as a society seem to be mighty fragile emotionally, and in too many cases unable to handle even the simplest of hardships. We expect the world to be perfect, and are unprepared for when it's not.

Just sit back and imagine: what would happen if a Katrina-like disaster were coming your way, or did come your way? Would you manage it, or would you sit and be an emotional wreck?

There are still people recovering from Katrina, 18 months ago. Every day another family gets a letter from the Army about a son who's not coming home for another Christmas. A smashed fender on ANY car rates low enough to be invisible on the "emotional wreck" scale.

Sorry, guys, but I call 'em as I see 'em. You need to suck up and quit letting a car drive you off the emotional edge. Buy only the car you can afford to buy AND RUN (complete with repairs and fuel and insurance costs), and if you can't afford collision insurance, buy a cheap car that won't wreck you financially and which you can replace if you or an uninsured motorist manage to total it.

These are cars. Things. Things that are manufactured in the hundreds of thousands. Don't get suckered by the slick marketing crap about how you're buying a lifestyle, and how if you suddenly don't have the car then YOU SUCK because you no longer have the lifestyle. Those marketing people laugh themselves all the way to the bank as they watch you put your emotions, and then your dollars, into their hands.

Absolutely! I tell people it has the turning radius of a motorcycle. Seriously, that is one superb aspect of this car. I can turn into and out of ANY parking space, even if I'm hemmed in by behemoth mom-mobile SUVs on all other sides.

 

Just be sure your settelment from their insurance includes Depreciated Value. Your new car isn't a new car anymore, it's a repaired wreck, which may substantially affect its trade-in value. You should be compensated for that but the person who harmed you.

While it's not a death in the family, it's still a loss of time and money. Getting a rental. Wondering if an uncommon part is in stock. Lots of time talking with the insurance, body shop, etc... Then when it's finally fixed several weeks later and several hundred dollars put down on the deductable, it's likely some evidence of the wreck lingers.

I've been in accidents and been very distraught immediately after it happened. Going about my business and just happen to be in the way of a distracted driver (and sometimes not driving defensively enough). I've been taken care of, but it's still an ordeal when we have so many other things to do in our life.

Seems kind of ironic of someone ranting about a member posting about a car wreck that seems to feel cool while displaying an anger management problem.

Thank goodness someone here has some common sense. Seriously, this guy needs to get off his high horse. Being in an accident, no matter how small, can rattle you financially and emotionally. I was just in an accident 3 weeks ago with my 3 month old prius and, yeah, it sucks!

 

"yeah, it sucks" is WAY, WAY different than, "It really hurts a lot in the beginning--I was an emotional wreck".

I just call 'em as I see 'em. If you're an "emotional wreck" from a simple fender bender, what will you be when true hardship comes about? How will you handle things for your families?

It's time for our society to stop and think about these things. If a fender bender makes one an "emotional wreck," then things are WAY too easy and/or expectations for life are WAY too high.

It wouldn't take much for terrorists, for example, to completely wreck the lives of such people.

 

While I'll agree that this collision does not compare to the victims of 9/11, Katrina, etc.... I still do not understand the need to rip a member that starts a thread on a collision - their have been many of them.

adam1991, consider reading your posts on this thead and try to imagine you are one of the other members....you might realize some consider them callous.

Forums such as PriusChat function as a support system to a degree - if that idea is repulsive, there is a lot you will probably hate about PC.

I beg to disagree. After driving a Jeep Wrangler for several years, the turning radius on the Prius seems pretty lame. Several times I've misjudged/failed a u-turn in the Prius because I knew the Jeep could do it.

But back on topic: Yes, never let things control your life.

 

Sorry that some fool not knowing how to drive hit your new car, I have had few new vehicles hit and it still just plain sucks , IT WAS NEW I agree with Bill , ASk Insurance about resale value or if it seems to be major damage tell them to total it. Get another new one. Some insurance adjusters I have met in my time would do that because they do not know what all is damaged that they cant see, maybe a wire is pinched but not broken yet may in a few years who knows

Sorry, I'm just an emotional dude.

I just couldn't believe it because I've always driven old junk and never had any traffic incidents whatsoever.

Then I decide to go for broke and get my hybrid dream car--not as a status symbol or anything--just something between me and the environment. I hadn't even shown it to any of my friends. I was very nervous about driving something with 7+ times the value of anything else I've ever owned. I was planning on being very easy on it, keeping it meticulous and in mint condition forever (like my parents do), and owning it for 20+ years, as we usually do in my family. Then not two weeks after bringing it home, this happens. It completely turned everything upside down.

Yesterday the state trooper called and said he reviewed the situation and wanted to tell me I was now at fault and would be receiving a citation. Yep, now I'm the problem.

Now I just want to pay up and have this all be overwith.

When I get the car back, I'm never taking it out of the garage again!!

The things that hit me especially hard are things that I had involvement in. I'm really hard on myself. If a natural disaster destroyed the car, I don't think it would have as much of an effect on me. But if I have a hand in it (and am now at fault for), I never let myself live it down. I'm trying to be easier on myself but this definately isn't helping.

It HAS been a huge life lesson for me. And yes, I DO need to suck it up and move on.

Must be ticket quota day. I hope you intend to fight it. I alo suggest filing your own motor vehicle charges against the other driver. In NJ that is done through the Municipal Clerk in the township where it occured and the statute of limitations is 30 days. This is not something to be taken lightly so if you aren't sure about something, ask and take good notes. Look sharp. Apparance isn't everything but it's probably 90%.
