    Jared,

I also bought a "preowned" 05. Our cars are still under the original warranty. What dealers (and third parties) offer are extended warranties, which you can buy until your vehicle exceeds the original warranty.

I contacted Troy by telephone several weeks ago, and he returned my call within a few days (email hadn't worked). There is really no rush on this. You will need to certify the mileage and the vehicle identification number, but that's not hard to do. Dealing with Troy was a pleasure, but you could probably also get excellent treatment from others, such as Jeff's recommendation above.

Troy and his dealership make their profit based on volume, not on margin, so it's a win-win for them and us.

    Good luck,

    Bruce

Hi all. I'm buying a new Prius; just waiting to pick it up in a couple of weeks at this point. The dealer tried to sell me on a refundable extended warranty for 6 yrs/75K for $1450. Boy am I glad I declined after seeing this. From a quick perusal of this thread, it seems like the consensus is that there is no real reason to get an extended warranty until the 3/36 is close to expiring. But maybe I missed something? Please feel free to convice me otherwise if there are valid reasons.

How about the service contract. I would appeciate any unbiased thoughts on whether that's worth it or not.

Thank you very much for any responses. I'm very greatful to be a new member here. I've already been browsing quite a bit and can see this is an excellent resource for a new Prius owner. I am very appreciative to all the hard work that many folks obviously put into this site.

I am little confused. See I have a 5yr/100k warranty. But I am already at 80,000 and am moving towards 100k. Is there any way to extend that warranty beyond 100k? Does anyone know, I don't trust asking my dealer.

I just got a driftwood pkg two two weeks ago, very pleased with all of 300 miles driven. I have been reading the warranty, many important components are covered for 15/150,000 under the CA emissions warranty, and 8/80 federal. May regret, but I will just skip any further buying. I think I will be fine with the factory warranty.

I have had my new Prius 3 weeks and love it. The person completing the financing tried to sell us the platinum extended care warranty for 6yrs/100,000 miles for $2,250!!!!! He also told us we had to buy it then and couldn't get it later, which we knew was not true. We found this web site and contacted Troy Dietrich at Toyota of Greenfield. He answered numerous questions by email and phone, and we purchased the same policy for $895 from him. I complained to Toyota for the false information and pressure and the extremely high price of the extended warranty from this particular dealership. I did not get the prepaid maintenance plan because after checking with the Service Dept. for the actual price of the services (again we were given false information by the financial person), it will actually cost less paying for individual services. I recommend contacting Troy Dietrich for any extended warranty you are interested in!

I'm in California. I just bought a 2007 Prius and bought the 7/72 platinum extended warranty for $1800. When I mentioned this to the dealer, they said that the warranties sold by out-of-state dealers (such as the ever popular Greenfield dealer) don't have the same coverage as the California warranties. Also, he suggested that Toyota may choose to not honor the extended warranty because the selling dealer is supposed to do an inspection on vehicles that have been driven off the lot.

Does anybody have any details on this? I don't see this mentioned in the forums...

    Thanks.

That's a bunch of BS, pardon my french. The warranty is legit and all Toyota warranties bought in California and Greenville come from the same place. When you buy from warranty direct, your not actually buying from an internet based website. It's illegal to buy internet web base insurance here in California. When you submit a quote, that goes directly to Troy that works at Toyota of Greenville. Your not buying from WarrantyDirect, but from a legit Toyota dealership.

I bought my warranty through Troy and I've asked my hometown dealer service manager here in SOCAL if they honor out of state Toyota warranties, he said yes. It doesn't make sense if you buy a warranty here in California and decide to move to Florida, and then you can't use the same warranty over there because it's from California. I'm sorry, but you got ripped off and dealers will tell you just about anything to try to sell you an overpriced warranty. I had originally bought my warranty here in California for $2000, I soon learned about Troy's warranty price, canceled the one at the dealer and bought the same warranty from Troy. Both warranty polices come from the same place, and the same components are covered. Anyone else have any comments on this?

If you do a search in this tread, you'll find something from Troy regarding your questions in more detail. He pretty much mentions the same thing I did.

New Prius Owner as of 4/1/07. I did buy the warranty only because at the time I was overwhelmed with the amount of electronics involved with this car. Now that I see this, man I should have brought the vasoline! I paid 1995 for the 6 year 100K mile plan. So what steps can I take to cancel this. The only drawback is it was added to the financing, but if I get back a check for 1995, I guess a $2000 loan at 2.9% isnt too bad. Once it is part of the loan, there is no way to get it removed t=and the payment lowered, correct?

I haven't heard back from my dealer on the matter, but I don't see why this would be a problem. They pitched it to me as "you can cancel any time" but if they don't want to remove it from the financing then they were totally lying. Ask! Let us know!

Well, called the dealer after calling Toyota to find out I need to call the dealer. I got the warranty for $726, they are sending me a check for the difference. Not too bad, I will use the difference to pay off a card with 21.99% interest(Sony Laptop). See Saved money on two things with one call, Hot Damn I should go play the nickel slots now, Im on a roll!! Nice way to get a low interest loan on something else.

    I'm over my head.

All those Prius electronics (and my bad recent experiences with VWs) have scared me to death, so I bought some warranty at the dealer for $690 or so (I can cancel in the famous 30 days). The dealer also gives me some kind of lifetime warranty, which is a puzzle to me. I plan to outlive the dealer....

Anyway, how can I educate myself on how to evaluate warranties?

I just want to get in the car, push the power button and get where I'm going. If it breaks, I want somebody other than me to pay to fix it. Most of all, I don't want it to break. I have spent enough time waiting for tow trucks....

    Thanks!

Need some advice quick! Our 2005 Prius was bought 1 1/2 years ago and we are already approaching 36,000 mile. (at 35,700). Since the Prius has been out for awhile...are people finding the warranty is needed? I know it's piece of mind but I would like to know if folks that put on miles quickly are finding it is useful.

We are putting on about 28,00 a year or more on the car. We are driving our other cars until we decide which is stupid but that 36k mark snuck up on us. Help!!

    Hi legendsguy! :)

If you want peace of mind, I suggest you get the warranty. Troy has an excellent deal if you decide to buy from PC. You got 300mi left, so I suggest you get on it! I've owned a few cars in that past and have always bought the extended warranty. My first car was a Chevy Malibu and transmission went out at 85K, I used the Extended warranty for a new transmission and paid itself off. My second car was a Toyota Camry and put 30,000 mi a year. Bought the Ext Warranty and never used it, never had any major problems with the car. The Prius has expensive components, and I've heard some horror stories from other Prius owners (who did not get the Extended Warranty) and now have a $10K bill, or more, in repair costs. hikes...

So it's up to you if you want to spend the money for peace of mind. If you have the money, why not? Here's another suggestion. You could invest your money and use it for repairs and/or maintenance later down the road. Not to mention, you'll be earning interest! Some people do this instead of buying the warranty.

I haven't heard of Prius owners using their extended warranty that much. I believe someone used it for the MFD. It's up to you, and Good Luck deciding!

Yup, they snookered me too. I should have known better. $1699 for 7 year 100k mi, $100 deductible, battery is excluded from warranty (they were up-front about that). Some company named Landcar Agency is the contract provider. Purchased 3-weeks ago, will cancel this week. Thanks everybody!

We decided to pass on the extended warranty. Toyota has a great reputation so we will take our chances.

I felt the same way, but since a large portion of the car is electronic, and that I deal with a lot of electronics (Cisco routers, switches, and phones) they do go out occasionally and are pretty expensive to replace, so if one part that costs more than $726 decides to go out, I will be happy.

I have never been a fan of buying an extended warranty. On the parts that matter the Prius is already covered for a long time (10 years/150k miles Hybrid system and 5 years drive train). I personally would just invest the money I would have spent on an extended warranty and have it ready down the road should I need it. But in reality, an extended warranty only pays off if the vehicle breaks. So basically you're hoping something goes wrong so you get your money's worth. If nothing goes wrong then it was a waste of money and just what the auto industry wants to happen.

An extended warranty is not peace of mind. If a vehicle needs an extended warranty, then what does it say about the manufactures quality?

Pre-paid maintenance plans are even worse.

Rarely do any of these pay off. Investing the money is a much better plan.

Really? 10 Years 150K? DO you have a special car or what? I just bought mine, built on 3/07 and it doenst have that kind of warranty. I felt that way about warranties, until I actually had one and used it. I had a 92 Ford Crown Vic that had a fuel pump failure that took out the wiring with it. The bill was well over $2500 to repair the damage, and al it cost me was the deductable. It paid for itself the first time out. Not al are like that, but if you get one at a decent price, it is great peace of mind.

Yes the Hybrid portion is 10 years or 150,000 miles. Not talking about the warranty for the rest of the vehicle. But Toyota's drive train warranty is 5 years or 60,000 miles. Everything else is 3 years or 36,000 miles.
