After a long six month wait, I picked up my 06 prius (Classic Silver, #6) and took it to an installer to have a Sirius Prius Radio directly installed. The installer placed the unit under the front passenger seat. Now, when I drive, I notice the passenger air bag light is always on, whether there is a passenger in the seat or not. Is this normal? I noticed after the installation that the instruction manual states that nothing should be under the passenger seat. When a passenger sits in the front seat, the air bag "on" signal is illuminated, which stays on and I think this is normal. My question is should the passenger air bag light stay illuminated even if no passenger is in the front seat? Any easy solutions or am I worrying about nothing?
In my 2006, the "Airbag" symbol is always on, but NOT the word "ON". If the word "ON" comes on and off as expected, I think you are OK. If the word "ON" is always on, then you have a problem. - Bob R.
The word ON comes on only if there is a passenger heavier than a certain weight sitting in the passenger seat. It should not come "ON" otherwise.
to clarify even further, it says "ON" when something's in the front seat that's heavy enough AND the seatbelt's buckled. If not, "OFF" will be illuminated.
... i don't get these problems in an old '04.. i want an '06 now.. hehe you guys in the 06 have a lot of cool things we don't have.. so.. can you switch your passenger airbag off then?

Adam, you replied to TP's post of Feb 27 2006. On another thread, he replied to posts of Feb 22 2005. Have we entered some sort of timewarp?
I just picked up my 2007 Prius and I was also wondering why the light stays on. If I'm by myself, "AIRBAG" is illuminated If my 9 year old is with me in the passenger seat "AIRBAG OFF" is illuminated. (She doesn't weigh much). If my 15 year old is with me "AIRBAG ON" is illuminated. In all cases, the illuminated message never turns off. Is this normal? Tom
I wish Toyota would have printed the words "Passenger Airbag" rather than illuminating them. They should only illuminate On/Off, because that's the true indicator of what's happening with the airbag. The words "Passenger Airbag" are static: since they never change, why make them appear to be an indicator? Just to advertise the airbag? In any user-interface situation, you avoid confusion by separating static elements, controls, and indicators. After all, we don't have a lit "Driver airbag" indicator, just "advertising" the presence of the driver airbag, so why advertise the passenger airbag?
In home-built aircraft, the FAA requires "EXPERIMENTAL" boldly displayed so any of your passengers can see it. This must be a similar thing, so any passengers know there is a small bomb waiting to go off in front of them if the guy behind the wheel screws up! =)
I also have the similar problem on my 2008 Prius. Is this really a normal thing. That always illuminated AIRBAG sign bothers me a little bit.
