I thought I'd post the results of my car check up today as they said that Toyota is aware of my problem and that they've encountered several cases of this.

A few weeks ago, I posted about a whirring noise behind my display. I brought the car back today even though they had initially informed me the noise was normal, as it was definitely getting worse. Turns out that this problem is caused by a problem with the brake actuator. There are two methods of trying to cure this problem. The first is that they'll bleed the brakes, which sometimes rectifies the problem with no other action. The second cure it to replace the actuator itself. They bled the brakes today but said that if it starts making noise again, I'll have to call him to order the part and they'll fix it under warranty.

Just an fyi for anyone experiencing this trouble. If there's a problem the noise is very evident. It started as short whirring (friction type) spurts of noise and progressed into a long drawn out noise of the same sort. If you place your ear to the display, the noise comes from directly behind there.

Thanks and please provide additonal details as they become available. I assume that they will be replacing your brake fluid as well.

so this still only happens at startup? strange.

i did post a new brake TSB from 2/27 the other day and it completely slipped my mind that your noise was still unresolved... d'oh! moving sucked the brains out of me...

in my defense it looked different than what you were describing.

no wonder they're so willing to do it too... it pays damn well for someone who knows how to bleed the brakes.

Yes, they've already performed everything necessary for the "brake bleed" option. It's only if the noise comes back that they'll have to perform a hard fix and get a new part for installation. It was very frustrating as they told me the noise was normal and I knew better. As of today, they've been very decent about servicing the matter. If the next option of a major repair is required, I'll post about the experience here. I figure people would want to know as they've indicated my problem is not isolated and that they're now experiencing this problem in general.

Hey, Galaxee. I just saw your post today. I must've posted at the same time as you. Yes, it remained unresolved. They bled the brakes and the noise went away for a few days but it came back this morning. I called the service center. I guess they'll have to actually replace the part. Thanks for your link.

For those possibly affected, my noise sounded more like a grinding and pressing the brakes didn't affect the noise. If you hear anything strange coming from behind the display, you may want to check this out as an option.

I think all of this has motivated me to purchase an extended warranty.

BRAKE FLUID CHANGE...for those of you needing a brake fluid change..."JUST BRAKES" does this change for $39.95 plus tax. I have a vacuum bleeder and can tell you, it would be worth the price at double! Brake fluid picks up moisture after time due to temperature and humidity changes...it is the condensation nuclei within the fluid that will deteriorate your brake system. I could and have done this replacement myself, but will go with "JUST BRAKES" from now on. "JUST BRAKES" is a franchise in the Dallas area...I don't know if they are located in other states.

Yes, I completely agree that brake fluid should be replaced at least every 4 years, preferably every 2 years. I have a 1984 Ford F-150 purchased new, and have flushed/bled the brakes yearly. The original master cylinder is still working fine. I finally replaced the front calipers and rear cylinders last year.

However, I must STRONGLY caution you that you can NOT perform this service on a Prius yourself, nor can this "Just Brakes" unless they have the Toyota diagnostic tester to access the Prius braking system.

Failure to use the Toyota diagnostic tester to enter the very complicated brake bleeding "dance" will almost certainly result in air in the braking system, which could lead to a crash. I believe forum member "hobbit" originally posted the Toyota brake bleed "dance" from the Toyota shop manual:

I had my 2004 Prius brakes flushed/bled at the dealer last fall. Cost around $90, took an hour. The slight whining noise I had sometimes heard also went away.

Please read the brake bleed "dance" pdf I have attached

Well, they had my car for two days to fix the brake actuator. I picked up the car last night and all was well. Today, upon start up, same exact noise happened. Bringing it back in next week. Anyone know what this could be?

might be one of the water pumps. there are 2 electric ones, one for each coolant system (engine, inverter) and one mechanical one for the engine.

I just received a call from Toyota. Turns out, they think the noise is coming from my CD player. All this after bringing in the car three separate times and having a two day operation on my car to "fix" a brake actuator that wasn't even broken. I'm actually relieved, however. I find it to be in my best interest that it's simply my radio that's defective and not part of the engine or an electrical component. The hopeful fourth and final visit to the dealer will be next week. Yipeee!

 i'm sorry ssimon, i just find that amusing...

ya think they would have opened the hood and listened for the noise before going ahead with a brake actuator replacement, mainly because if you haven't done a few of em before it's a real PITA.

Bleeding my Mercedes brakes is not one of my personal favorite jobs. There seems to be a bit of black magic involved with the bleeding process. Sometimes it will work perfectly, and then other times it seems like you end up with a lot of air in the system. The best strategy to follow when bleeding brakes is to repeat the procedure several times in order to make sure that you have removed all the trapped air from the system. Though I think in your case changing the actuator is the best option you got... Brake bleeding would only fix your problem temporary but changing the worn part would resolve it permanently...

Glad I could provide a little levity for you

Just kiddin'. :) As long as they don't f up my car, scratch or dent it - I could car less. Sometimes it takes an effort but I try not to get excited about things such as a little loss of time.
