It's getting a little cold out here in Sonoma County and for some reason my Prius' computer has a pop up for when it reaches 37degrees outside. Can anyone explain this to me?

Maybe to warn you that the roads may be icy?

    what seawolf said.

at 37, there may be black ice esp. if it's sunny and there are shaded areas. The sunny weather lulls you to a false sense of security that it's warm and dry and above zero means that ice has melted.

I've never been able to figure it out. At least if the message came up when it hit 32 degrees I would know that it was telling me that it was freezing. But 37 degrees?

did you not read what we said? lol.

It isn't limited to the Prius. Some other vehicles do have this warning.

In my '07 328xi there is like a AOL Instant Message noise when starting the car and a snowflake, on my land rover it just beeps and the prius has a nice little pop up... all for the same reasons:)

Again it is possible when the ambient temps are at 37 degrees Fahrenheit that in the shade and other place for the temps to drop low enough to form ice. My last two cars did this as well.

As far as I'm concerned, I can't rely on the outside temperature reading. Its usually 4-6 degrees high.

So 37 degree reading is really somewhere around 32 degrees.

This is one area Toyota really messed up on. How can I rely on the mileage calculations, etc. if they can't get the thermometer right?

It would be nice if it was more like the Audi A4, it have a large snowflake in the spot that the degrees use to be, just to remind you. instead of popping up then disappearing after a second

Probably because the factory conservatively decided to warn you when the temperature got to within 3 degrees Celsius above freezing - that's pretty close to 37 degrees F.

My old Volvo turned on a red LED when it was 35 or lower. The Prius seems not quite so distracting.

    It's in the owners manual:

Snowflake: Overpasses and bridges may become icy.

since they chill with the wind and not the insulated ground, they may freeze first.

You're 2007 doesn't have the dash snowflake. They took it out in 06? my 04 has a yellow flake on the dash. It's right next to the "lights on" indicator. It stays on as long as the car stays below 37. Some find it annoying because it's bright.

Since 06 (high resolution MFD), there is a message come down like a pull down menu. No more snow icon light.

If you block your grill enough the reading will be even more inaccurate. On some tanks I have a variance of 20% between the MFD and my calculations for mpg. The only indicator I completely trust is the flashing pip.

A radiator blocker will mess up the thermometer.

You could maybe get it replaced under warranty. Mine agrees within a degree of independent measurements.

Hey! It was a while back that we first saw that warning in our A4 Cab. Southern California, we don't see much cold weather. Now we have a Prius (06 Black,#3) for commuting, usually the Cab is a pleasure car. The snowflake warning is a great idea because it really catches your eye.

Did you purchase an A4 first or the Prius. Just curious. - Nda3rdCar

I dont think so the temperature readings are very close to +/- 1 as far as my experiences are ......and reagarding the mileage ...i have come to conclusion ......it has consistently shown 2MPG higher than i actually get for last 17000 miles i drove
