Hello, I'd like to find a way to enable my 2007 Prius navigation system WHILE DRIVING. Of course, I'm very safety conscious and wouldn't be doing this while I'm driving, but rather I want to be able to do it if my boyfriend is driving (or vice versa).

I found the "lockpick" product made by Coastal Electronic Technologies, but this only seems to work for the 2004-2005 models: http://www.coastaletech.com/LOCKPICK_MAIN.htm

Does anyone know any way to do this on a 2007 Prius that doesn't involve dismantling the entire vehicle and voiding every warranty???

    Thanks in advance!
    :D

I don't have a 2007, but I thought that the 2006 & 2007 with Nav let you input voice commands. I assumed that worked at over 5 mph.

I haven't had much luck with voice commands; I ask for one thing and I get another.

You can open just a piece of the dash and cut a wire. Put a switch there and turn it to "off" when your passenger wants to enter information. Take a look at http://www.evnut.com/prius_speed_wire.htm (scroll to the bottom) to see which wire.

First of all, Welcome to Priuschat!

On earlier models, we found a series of taps on the MFD than put the car into diagnostic mode and allowed the driver (or passenger) to disable the speed shutoff. Toyota either felt that this override was no longer needed or read about it here because they took it out.

Other than the modification you mentioned, I am not aware of an override for the speed shutoff.

Thanks for the warm welcome and for the replies!

I like the wire cutting idea, but I'm pretty sure that isn't a good idea since my Prius is on a 4 year lease.

Is there ANY other creative way to accomplish this? We're always looking for directions to certain places while we're driving and pulling over to the side of the road is getting really annoying.

    Thanks again!

unfortunately, the only workaround is the wire cutting. It's understandable that, with a lease, you may not want to do this... and while i wouldn't want to suggest you openly deceive your dealer, you could use a magnetic switch mounted behind the dash somewhere to activate it - You can find one that will be closed when there's no magnet there (ie normal operation), then just stick the magnet in place and it'll be open (ie interrupt the wire so you can use the override). The great thing about such a solution is it's not obvious when sitting in the car. One of my buddies used such a system as a kill switch for his old car back when we were living at school (and it wasn't a good part of town)... funny thing was, he took it out for a week to fix it, and that week the car was stolen! (He got it back a few days later)

a magnetic switch? hmmmm, this sounds interesting. the problem is, i'm not a techie at all, and i have no idea what this is, what it looks like, how to get one, how to install it, etc etc. as for deceiving the dealer, i have no problem with that. would you mind providing some more details on how to do this little trick you speak of??

You can find details for the speed wire interrupt process here: http://www.evnut.com/prius_speed_wire.htm (Darell's site, one of the great resources out there for mods)

If you go into your local radio shack, they would be able to find (or order if they don't have it in the store) what you need... it's basically like the little magnetic switches used in home security systems (you know, when the windows up a little light lights up on the panel, close the window the light goes off), except it's operation is reversed. you need to make sure that the switch you get is closed (ie allows the signal to pass through) when the magnet is NOT present, and open (disconnects the wires) when the magnet is present.

If you don't know how to solder, you can also get some wire taps at radio shack that will make it easy... they're essentially small doodads (technical term :p) that clip onto two wires and join them electrically.

So the basic procedure is to locate the speed wire in question (use the pictures from Darell's site), and cut the wire. Either solder more wire onto each side, or use the wire taps to attach more wire so you have some to work with, and run it to where ever you're putting the switch. then attach the switch to the two wires (either solder or more wire taps) and you'll be set.

I look forward to someone discovering the the soft override on 06/07 as well, until then the voice works fairly well for me. A quick summary...

The main voice command to know for voice navigating is "Address". The system will then prompt for each part of the address (State -> City -> Street -> House #). I have actually had pretty good success with this method, but I guess it largely depends on your accent, and if the desired destination has some weird spelling. ;)

You can also give any POI category as a command ("Gas Station", "Restaurant", etc..) and all the icons will appear on the map. Alternately, preface this with the command "Nearest" (i.e. "Nearest Gas Station") and it will automatically point you to the closest one as well as have a 'Show List' button - of course, you can't press the 'Show List' while in motion. <_<

My biggest beef with the voice nav is you can't (AFAIK) set an intersection destination by voice. Oftentimes, I find myself knowing the neighbourhood I want to get to, but don't know an exact address. Using the Address command, you can just omit the house number and hit "Add to Destination" and it will direct you to that street, but this may not be appropriate if it is a very long street! Would have been nice if there was an "Intersection" command and just prompt for a second street... Just how difficult would that have been?

If you get the other type it'll still work. Some have mounted the switch in one of the compartments (like the one under the radio or either glove compartment) and the magnet on the door. Opening the door breaks the connection and allows your passenger to enter information.

We were proud to find that Coastal Elc (etc) offered a "LOCKPICK" for our 07 Touring pkg #6--but when it arrived it did not fit! Since we returned it, the only responses we've been able to get from them is something like "Didn't you get our message?" :(

I would love to see a nice, concise list of available GPS commands. Anyone have a link to a good list?

Another option would be to simply purchase another one of the blank blockoff plates from your local Toyota dealer, so you can drill it out for a switch. Then, when you turn the car back in you just solder/tape the 2 wires back together and pop the original plastic piece back into the dash, no harm done. ;)
