All of your mpg's look great to me. I have owned my Prius since 12/05 and the best mpg I've ever gotten was about 44. It is very cold hear in the midwest right now and my overall mpg has dropped to 41 and is falling. I think that the mpg's that I see on the forum are achieved in driving conditions other than mine. I have a ten minute commute to work and allmost all of my driving falls into short trips of ten to twenty minutes. I love the car. 40 mpg is great gas milage! Just not as good as I see here. Is there anyone else out there in a similar driving situation as mine? Are you seeing the same kind of mpg? Jim
I averaged 39-41 mpg on average via the MFD. It's been cold in Austin this winter. I have about 3800 miles on my Prius now plus I don't exactly drive 55mph or below (except in school zones).
I just tallied up all four tanks from January and came up with 49.5mpg. Don't think I can complain about that considering the weather we've had for the second half of the month.
I've put in about three tanks of gas since I bought it in January, and I've been averaging about 47.5 per tank according to the computer. My driving is about 25% city and 75% highway, but the highway miles are not steady speeds. I often am in stop-and-go or slow-go traffic. Looking at the Consumption screen, it's been reporting about 52 city and 45 highway.
I bought my Prius late August, and have less than 2400 miles on it. I have a short (3.5 mile) commute, which is, I imagine, why I don't get higher mileage. But, I can't complain. Here are my stats: Lifetime Avg calculated = 44.0 (dropped from 44.8 due to a really crappy last tank avg of 40.8) Lifetime Avg per MFD numbers = 45.7 Six fill-ups since purchase (the last one was yesterday), averaging 28 days and 395 miles per tank So far, I figure I have saved 379 gallons of gas vs. my old 4Runner. Not bad for less than 6 months. B) <--This is the smug grin emoticon, right?
I think that anything in the mid 40s is pretty darned respectable for a 3.5 mile commute! Sounds like you are the kind of person who would really benefit from a plug-in option. You could just about commute for a week on a single charge and not have to deal with the constant driving on a cold engine.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(brick @ Feb 10 2007, 08:39 PM) </div> You're right Brick. With a plug-in, the only thing I would have to worry about is the shelf life of the gasoline in the tank.
Update: I am now getting 42 MPG average on my 2007 Prius. For some reason, my first tank of gas that came with the car really did poorly. Could some stale gas have been at fault? I did recently check my tire pressure, since so many people recommend going with a higher pressure. I was totally shocked when I saw what my Toyota dealer at set them at. Both front tires were set to 42 psi, and the rear tires were both at 40 psi!!! That was how my dealer delivered my Prius to me. WOW. Lance
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(LanceinOregon @ Feb 28 2007, 02:06 PM) </div> what are they supposed to be set at?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(squall @ Feb 28 2007, 04:35 PM) </div> The 42 front, 40 rear is what those in the know on PriusChat recommend. Most dealers set the pressure much lower. Dave M.
My wife and I have owned a total of five Toyota Priuses. Based upon our driving habits, the first four all averaged about 44mpg. Not so with my new Prius "Touring" version. It now has 16,000 miles on it and religiously gives only 39.8 to 39.9mpg. I have discussed this with my dealer several times and also with folks at 1-800-GoToyota, but to no avail. I obiously I like my Priuses, but I don't think I would get a Touring version again. There is something "different." The Service Manager said "You can't trust the computer, calculate it yourself." I have, over and over. Calculated at the "pump," I get even less. About 37mpg. We have noticed that when driving in mountains on the "downslope" at high speed (70mph or so) when you would expec the mpg to go way up, it in fact goes way down and you can't keep up with the traffic. It appears to be using "engine braking" even though it is not in the "B" mode. How have we had five Priuses? We both drive them and one was totalled by a fast moving young lady in a Mustang, from the rear. Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!
I have almost 9K on mine and am averaging about 42. I did recently get 50 mpg on a trip from Seattle to Portland and back. That is a relatively flat trip. on anohter long trip to Walla Walla i got a bit less but that was because i have to cross the Cascades over a pass and do lose when climbing (but i get it back on the downslope). With warmer weather i am getting about 44 to 46. But overall i belive i will end up with about 43 mpg at the end of my first year and that is mostly driving in Seattle on short trips 3 miles or less) and seattle is hilly. I do notice when i am going south (downhill in the area of Seattle i live in), i can get much better milage, but it all averages out on my trip back home going north. So i am not getting quite as low as you are but i don't see the kinds of milage i find in some forums in this chat. You are in Fort Worth, TX and i imagin that is more a flat area plus the weather is warmer than up here in Seattle. I think if i were down there with less hills and warmer weather i would be getting about 45 average, or maybe a bit more. I had the same thoughts you did about the touring model but then when i got 50 MPG on a road trip to Portland i had to modify my feelings. 50 MGP on the highway is good milage and i averaged about 70 MPH. But i must admit, in city driving, i am not seeing what i would have expected. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Phyton @ May 5 2007, 08:46 AM) </div>
