Maybe I'm just not with it when it comes to automatic weapons so I'm trying to get an idea of what the uses are for it. So come on all of you automatic weapon owners, what uses do you get out of it? Feel free to add your reason if it's not on the list.

First, it would help if you clarified your terminology. Automatic weapons are still banned for the common man. You are probably upset over SEMI-automatic weapons.

I own a semi-auto 9mm pistol. It was my off-duty when I was on-the-job. It is now locked in a gun safe and is my home protection weapon.

Since we have a world-wide audience here, "definition" is important.

So, are you speaking of auto or semi-auto weapons in your poll. (I suspect semi)

Upset? Moi? Mais non. Don't worry, be happy. B) No, I don't mean semi-automatic. Yes, I know that the automatic weapons are illegal but that doesn't mean that there aren't a lot of people out there who own one. I've owned 9mm guns before. I learned how to shoot them, I was adept at taking them apart and cleaning them, my marksmanship was getting pretty good but I just have kids running around the house and don't want a gun in the house because it makes me nervous to have a gun and a kid in the house at the same time. I've had to reiterate from time to time that I'm not a liberal so I guess I'll have to add that I'm not a pacifist either. The people that I wonder about are those on the extremes.

Automatic weapons are almost a necessity for today's "super-prey."

Also handy if you're a really, really bad shot.

Well given the liberal bend on this website and the nature of the response recieving the most votes I must concluded that liberals have small, uhem, manhoods and need guns to compensate.

First of all, they aren't illegal. After completeting several forms, background checks, and jumping through several hoops and paying certain taxes, you may have one (if you agree to follow the rules when owning it, ie. keeping it locked up and stuff)... that is, unless, you live in some liberal craphole.

Second, the reason I'd want one is because I can. I don't own a fully automatic firearm but if I had the desire to, I'd do it. My finger can go bang fast enough with my semiautomatic.

liberal bend? Oh, that's right, if there are fifty cons and two libs, the cons automatically think that they're outnumbered. Of course, the con's real problem isn't how big they are, it's trying to stand at attention in the first place that's difficult.

I don't own any automatic firearms, but I do own a few sound suppressors. Both types of items are controlled under the 1934 National Firearms Act. As another poster mentioned, it isn't a cash and carry business. Worse, the 1986 FOPA included an amendment which closed the national registry to new machinegun registrations.

This means that civilians can only transfer machineguns which were registered prior to the effective date of FOPA. (Different rules apply to manufacturers and dealers, naturally, if they hold an FFL and have paid the appropriate tax. They can then sell new machineguns to LEO and military customers.)

Short version: supply has remained fixed, while demand has increased. Prices have skyrockted. You can purchase a semi-automatic AR-15 for $1,200, but an automatic M-16 will cost you $14,000+ at current market rates.

    To puirchase:

    A. Pay the seller.
    B. Fill out a BATFE Form 4 (to include fingerprints, photograph, and the signature of your local chief law enforcement officer acknowledging you aren't a fruitcake) in duplicate.
    C. Send the Forms to BATFE along with $200 (transfer tax).
    D. Wait 3-6 months on average.

If you pass the checks, the transferor will receive an approved Form 4 in the mail. You may then go pick up your purchase.

The CLEO signature is waived if you're doing the transfer as a trust or LLC.

I'd buy a machinegun for fun, but I don't have that amount of disposable income. I'm fine with the transfer paperwork, but the law blocking post-1986 machineguns from civilian ownership breaks my heart.

Some states and/or cities do not permit machinegun ownership.

Hmm... if I had an automatic weapon, I'd learn how to write my name into the side of a Hummer. It's gonna take a lot of pratice...

    For home defense????
    Are you nuts?!!! <_<

If you feel the need to have firearms for home security, get a shotgun.
The life you save may be that of a neighbor five houses away. ;)

With a shotgun, you are also more likely to hit the lowlife intruder.

Me personally, for home security . . . Machete!

When I was young, there was a Doonesbury cartoon about burying guns in the backyard, and I asked my dad if HE was going to have to bury all his guns to keep them. I grew up around guns, have gotten beautiful bruises from military guns, and since I have never even aimed a gun at a living thing, I've never had the opportunity to accidentally shoot my friends in the face. Perhaps it comes from growing up barefoot in Florida, but I've never been able to get behind gun control as anything more than registration.

I don't really believe in giving up my rights just because someone else abused them. I have no use for high power weapons, but it's not like my being unable to get them doesn't prevent less scrupulous folks from finding a way.

That's a good point. Guns are basically symbols of violence. There aren't any nonviolent uses for them. Even target practice is practice for violence. They're also a talisman for fear. I'm an advocate for the belief that all negative emotion is based on fear. As Michael Moore showed in Bowling for Columbine, Americans are a very fearful people and it permeates everything that we do.

Jack, let me guess, as long as the water/sewer/power works, you wouldn't care if Kim Jong Il was our leader!!!

Freedom isn't and NEVER will be free.
