Buying under invoice?

    I just traded in my 2004 Prius with 59000 miles on it for an 2007 with package NW#6. The sticker price was $29,409.00 and they sold it to me for $2,000.00 under MSP.

    I went to Toyota's own website. Then took the option to build and price a Prius with the #2 package.

    I just checked, and this same local Toyota dealer here in Eugene, OR still has this sale price on. They are even taking $1,000 off the price of a base Prius.

    That price on the website is not the invoice, that is the MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price). "Invoice" refers to what the dealer paid for the vehicle. Dealers would have to be downright desperate to sell a car under invoice, as they would be losing money on the vehicle. I highly doubt dealers are that desperate to unload Prii quite yet....
    To find a rough approximation of the invoice, check edmunds.com
    For example, my Package 2's invoice is listed as $21,999. The dealer showed me his invoice on his computer screen, which was $22634. (He said the invoice listed is a little lower than actual). They were offering $1000 off sticker price (MSRP), which brought mine to $23234 (originally 24234 because it had floor mats & rear bumper protection). Here's the example of edmund's pricing list:

    Anywhoo, I feel that $1000 is a pretty good deal to get off of MSRP....
    Hopefully this will clear up some confusion.

    Yeah, his numbers don't make sense. $23000 for 07 w/package 5 is ~$2500 under invoice and even w/the dealer holdback, the dealer would've lost a whole ton of money.

    Got my base prius with no options (well they had $199 floor mats which seem to be added to all 2007s I could find) for $2500 off MSRP last night in Oakland (about $700 under invoice). Great deal as dealers seem to discount the more opt'd out packages more than the base models.

    The invoice pricing I see on the internet isn't the same invoice as the Gulf State Toyota invoice is it? I really hate our distributor, and one reason this will be my first Toyota ever. Even if I get $1000 off MSRP, it will include over $1000 in unwanted options from GST. So its hard to tell if I'm getting a good deal or not.

    Yes, I realized my mistake in referring to invoice in my first post, which is why I posted that follow up message to clarify that I really meant to refer to MSRP.

    Sorry for causiing confusion about that.

    Just this past September, the other Toyota dealer in our metro area told me that I would have to wait a month for the Prius model and color that I wanted, and they insisted that I had to pay $1,100 over the MSRP.

    I reported them to Toyota, and will never set foot on their property here in Springfield again.

    The Test Drive they gave me did hook me on getting a Prius, though. The dealer in Eugene ended up being the beneficiary of their sales efforts, though. :lol:

    Dealers often receive rebates from the factory, aka holdback. Thus it is possible to sell a car at or even below "factory invoice" and still make a profit.

    I got mine at published invoice and I think that's as good as you'll do in the midwest. I had several dealers competing with each other and none would go lower. Good luck!

    Research - I got Invoice pricing thru three systems - some online site (that forwarded my info to various local dealers), AAA and CostCo's local dealer. Then hunted around for a Touring model in the color I wanted, and could not locate a #4 package, but did find one in a #6 which had been languishing on the lot for three weeks, after being brought up from a South Bay dealer. Negotiated -$500 off invoice. Avoided the extra "additions".

    Its shopping.

    Oh, yeah, found other dealers with other colors, willing to sell them ( # 6 ) to me for anywhere between $ 1,200 off MSRP (still $ 2,150 more than my final price) and $1,010 over MSRP.... so it all depends on the local conditions and what you can work out...

    I don't generally "buy" any statement relative to invoice... there are just too many meaningless claims out there. Yes, you can use Edmunds, but many don't know what the true invoice is. The biggest problem in making comparisons is the so-called "destination" charges.

    Bottom line is final price on a given package. In our own case (in Portland, Oregon in early March '07), a Package #2 in color of choice costed $22,600 (including 4 oil/filter changes and full tank of gas). In this area, it's hard to beat that by more than $50. Negotiations through a Costco dealer began at $23,167 which was supposedly $600 over invoice.
