<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Sufferin' Prius Envy @ Feb 24 2007, 08:17 PM) </div> i fail to understand how illegals are responsible for our life savings going bye-bye. while we do appreciate the consideration, spe, we can't see it. besides, of all the places we've gone to... the vast majority require payment up front. [aside: you know what it's like to have to scrounge up $850 on a moment's notice?] it's not like an illegal is going to be able to skip out on paying for a procedure, if that's where you were going. we suspect it's more along the lines of the "i didn't get better so i'm suing you and everyone in your practice" mentality.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(galaxee @ Feb 24 2007, 11:25 PM) </div> SPE is referring to the fact that in California no one can be turned away from treatment for lack of money. He assumes that the illegals are sucking the "system" dry with free healthcare. It's bigger and more complicated, with insurance companies and HMOs driving costs up so that the insured pay for the uninsured. They've also passed legislation that doesn't allow the hospitals to charge the uninsured more than they charge an HMO. The Hospitals were trying to get back revenue by charging as much as four times the rate they charge HMOs to the uninsured. But the insured are destroying the Emergency Room system by using it for routine healthcare because they don't want to wait 6-8 weeks of an appointment with their primary care physician. (I was actually advised by a secretary to go to an emergency room when I couldn't see the doctor right away. She told me to LIE about something and then pull a "while I'm here...." to get treatment for whiplash. I had already been to the office for the whiplash and under the HMO could NOT go to an emergency room for the same condition. No. I didn't go.) I expect illegals are a very, VERY small part of the problem. We have our own domestic citizen working poor with no insurance contributing to the problem enough to make the illegals a minor consideration. But that doesn't prevent the neo-cons from there narrow minded tunnel vision. And he doesn't mention that his own Republican Governor is promising unemployment relief to the illegal migrant workers that are out of work because of all of the crops that were destroyed in the frost. I may be liberal but my feeling is...no work...go where there is work or go home. The arguement for illegal workers being allowed to stay is that there is work no one else is willing to do. Well, now there isn't any work. So....go back home. And start the process that allows you to work LEGALLY. In the meantime our legislators can reform the law to allow them to work LEGALLY.

If it's a joke, ha ha ha, it's very funny If it's serious: None of my crimes has been a "slip-up." Every one was carefully-considered, performed in public in open daylight, and those few that resulted in a court appearance, I told what I had done, and when there were trials, the military and/or police witnesses testified to my peaceful and respectful comportment. Canada is not excluding people for jay-walking. They are not excluding people for infractions that their legal system considers minor. They are excluding people only for crimes which, in Canada, would carry a penalty of jail time. The fact that drunk driving is considered minor in the U.S. and is considered serious in Canada may give frivolous people an opportunity for humor. But Canada is just doing what the U.S. does: Excluding criminals. Canada does not consider anything I've done to be criminal. The difference is that the U.S. also excludes people who hold views the administration does not like. Canada is a country where people are still allowed to express their opinions.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(galaxee @ Feb 24 2007, 08:25 PM) </div> NORTH COUNTY ---- A state report quietly released last spring shows illegal immigrants made up the largest single group of those giving birth at taxpayer expense in the state and in San Diego County in 2004. The May report, "Medi-Cal Funded Deliveries," states that of the 14,350 taxpayer-funded births in the county that year, 5,814, or 40.5 percent, were to illegal immigrants. That is an 18 percent increase over the 4,916 Medi-Cal-funded deliveries to illegal immigrants in San Diego County in 2001, as shown in an earlier state report. http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2007/01/07...40_021_6_07.txt Anchor Babies: Is Citizenship an Entitled Birthright? http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eve/277903001.html And this is just baby deliveries! And it gets worse with other loopholes; such as the one that allows US businesses to own a subsidiary in an underdeveloped country and have the ability to hire people at that subsidiary and then bring them here to work at their US location, circumventing any immigration quota applicable to that country. Their salary is paid at the country of origin and they live here on some type of stipend.
...so we should just pick up an accent that nobody can guess and say we're not citizens? we really don't have the money to pay for the MRIs and such anymore anyway. seriously, as far as i'm aware the law here is that you can't turn away *life-saving* medical care regardless of financial condition. i think i'll have to do some digging there and verify. i did some cursory investigating after stopping to assist at an accident on the side of the road involving a dude in a truck going 45 mph and an immigrant worker on a bike (who went to duke hospital and died the next day) but that was over a year ago. still, it doesn't explain why we have to pay so much to see orthopedic and neurology specialists...
Under federal law, Medicaid pays for care of illegal immigrants only when they have medical conditions that could jeopardize their health or lives. But a somewhat conflicting federal law requires hospitals to examine -- and if an acute medical problem is found, treat -- anyone who shows up at emergency rooms, regardless of legal status. If an uninsured illegal immigrant receives emergency care and Medicaid does not pay, it is a form of uncompensated care. Medicaid, unlike hospitals, does try to separately account for illegal-immigrant care. Spending on such care in North Carolina doubled from $25.8 million in 2000 to $52.8 million in 2005, according to the N.C. Division of Medical Assistance, the state's Medicaid manager. Still, care for illegal immigrants absorbs just a small portion of North Carolina's total Medicaid spending. In fiscal year 2005, the cost of care for illegal immigrants was less than one half of 1 percent of the Medicaid program's total budget of $8.2 billion. ..... Although it's hard to gauge how much, the growth of the illegal immigrant population is pushing up uncompensated-care costs at hospitals throughout the state, said Dalton, the hospital association spokesman. The association estimates that illegal immigrants account for about a third of the 1.3 million North Carolinians who have no health insurance. Since those without insurance often can't afford to pay, the cost of their care is typically absorbed by hospitals and passed on to insured patients in the form of higher bills. The cost of health care for the uninsured in North Carolina was more than $1.4 billion in 2005, according to research compiled by Families USA, a national consumer advocacy group. Most of those costs were absorbed by hospitals. http://www.newsobserver.com/1155/story/412836.html still, this applies mainly to hospitals. so, my surgery bills and his upcoming nerve block/CT procedure... which comprise only a comparatively small amount of the total medical costs we've endured. though i really don't wanna know what the latter is going to cost us. can't blame all of this on the illegals, though i can't say i like paying their tab and ours.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(JimN @ Feb 25 2007, 07:29 PM) </div> But not if they didn't pay into unemployment. The majority of illegals are paid cash under the table. That means they DIDN'T pay into unemployment or any other taxes. They don't pay any taxes and neither to their employers. Here's an example, although it's not migrant farm workers. But the unpaid taxes are to the tune of $18 million dollars. Execs indicted for employing illegals. They key word here is illegal. I'm all for allowing them to work as migrant farm workers legally and mandating that employers pay them on record. But if I turn a blind eye to this illegal act, I should also allow prostitution and drug dealing. There's a a lot of lost revenue there too.
