I called my auto insurance agent this morning. I'm with Mercury and have a clean driving record and currently own a Mustang GT. The Prius will actually cost about $16 more per six month policy. He said the reason was because the chance of bodily injury in that vehicle is increased slightly and the accident repairs would be more since parts are more difficult to find than with my current vehicle. One good thing though is that it's not a high theft risk.

It's kinda like getting a raise, you need to change jobs in order to see a significant jump in pay otherwise you're stuck getting paid based on how you started.
I went from a saturn to the prius and My rate went down also (I have full coverage, including replacement)....
Our rate went up as well (from 98 Subaru Outback to 07 Prius). We're with Allstate. Need to shop for some different insurance.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(KarGrrl @ Feb 14 2007, 03:11 PM) </div> KarGrr, I am with State Farm and I traded my 2001 Kia Optima (blue book of < $6,000) for my 2006 PRIUS. I kept the same coverage ($500 deductible) and only paying an extra $10 every six months. Not bad my opinion for an upgrade. Do more searching. It also depends on the year of your vehicle. If it is a 1985 Mustang then it makes sense that your insurance will be higher. Check the blue book value of your mustang and compare that to the blue book of the PRIUS.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(KarGrrl @ Feb 14 2007, 04:11 PM) </div> The prius was our third car. Because it was to replace my wife's 2003 350Z miles, total rate for three cars went unchanged compared to just our 2 cars when the Z was my wife's commuter car. We have AAA.
Our '06 Prius replaced an '03 Grand Am. We are with State Farm and our insurance went decreased by about $8 per month.
Our 04 Prius and 96 Subaru are charged the same for identical liability coverages through Amica. Comp on the Prius with a $500 deductible is $30/month, but note this is very locality and driver record dependent. There is no way in hell a Prius should cost the same as Mustang. Dump them ! btw, your agent was blowing smoke regarding the car safety. From IIHS: http://www.iihs.org/ratings/rating.aspx?id=641
