With the harsh (-30C) winter weather, upon start up I get a earsplitting static noise through the audio speakers even though the audio is off. After several minutes of warm up it seems to go away. It is inconsistent but alarming when it happens as it seems to choose full volume as a default. Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this?

welcome to PriusChat! I haven't experienced the problem you have, but I did have some weird clicks and pops from my lower front speakers. I think I tracked the problem down to a plug/socket in the driver's door. There is a multi-wire plug that goes into a socket mounted in the door about half way between where the control switches are located and where the release latch is, all under the plastic trim panels.

Since it's new, take it back to the dealer and let them fix it, but this may be a clue as to where to look.

What model audio system do you have? More details get better answers.

As a fellow Winnipeger, just want to let you know that I've not experienced any abnormal noises from my audio system during this *&%# cold spell.

When it's *really* cold, I get some electronic sounds coming through my radio on my Classic Prius for the first few seconds after starting, and then it goes away.. My guess is that the noise suppression filters in the radio are probably slightly temperature senstive and when cold, they allow a bit of the engine/electronic noise to come through.. I actually noticed this on my old Corolla as well- when it was really cold, you'd hear some buzzes and clicks on the radio for a few minutes and then it would go away.. The cars have never shown any signs of malfunction so I've always just ignored the noises..
