US auto giants safe under Bush energy plan

    The bulk of the reductions targeted by Bush in his State of the Union speech are to come from increased use of alternative fuels, like corn-derived ethanol, by 2017.

    That is something the "Big Three" US automakers have been lobbying for but which critics say will be hard to meet, with corn prices at 10-year highs and alternatives to corn ethanol years away.

    Would you rather throw the "Big Three" into convulsions with the associated economic fallout. aND We shall see what becomes of the EU standards now that their "Big Three" are voicing HUGE concerns regarding the financial impact on them if they are forced to meet certain standards.

    Halliburton's quarterly revenue rose 8 percent to $6.02 billion from $5.57 billion in the previous year, topping analysts' estimates of $5.9 billion. Gains at the energy services group were partially offset by lower revenue from KBR Inc. due to decreased activity on government services projects for the U.S. military.

    See, no matter how much the government tries, the forces of private industry (which you worship so) will force US automakers to change. Problem is, the domestics have *never* been amenable to change...and it's this reluctance which is has caused problems in the past.

    The industry is moving towards efficiency and cleanliness across the board; either US automakers get with the program or it's all over.

    If you'll look at the market over the last three or four decades, it'll become apparent to you that government intervention has, in the long run, been one of the biggest positives the industry has ever experienced. In terms of economy, performance, and safety, the automobiles we're all forced to rely on are years ahead of where we would have been if we'd left their manufacturers to their own devices.

    What convulsions to the big 3, the article clearly points out that the proposed standards and timeframe are no threat to them. And for those of us of a certain age, we've heard them complain that 1960's safety standards, unleaded gas, airbags, CAFE, and you name it would be the death of them, and yet they continue to remain in business.

    Don't you find it amazing that Detroit can make heated headlight washers, moonroofs, ABS, ESC and can't make a car where the engine goes off when it is stopped at a light or in traffic?

    The only vehicles I know of that do this are the Prius and a Harley Davidson Golf Cart.
