I'm thinking of making an extended center console to fill in the space between the dash and the existing unit. Has anyone done this or modified one from another model to work? The space in front of the existing center armrest/console is just wasted and not useable as is.
Just note that the cupholder and hidden drawer will need space. I'm not sure how you'd access the drawer unless you make the extension shallow. Besides, it's meant so that you can access (and exit) any side of the vehicle. It's carried over from the first generation design.

maybe you can get an extended box to replace the existing drawer, make it fixed but add a sliding lid to protect your stuff from prying eyes
That spot in front of the center console is a handy spot for a removable litter basket which doesn't interfere with the cupholder, and because it's removable, will not permanently block the full opening of the secret drawer. Check out my and topkick's posts/pictures here: http://priuschat.com/forums/prius-main-forum/37201-need-center-console-thing.html Note that I eventually used velcro hooks on the bottom of the litter basket to stabilize it on the center hump carpeting ... the stick on velcro tapes I originally used on the back of the smooth plastic litter basket and front of the embossed plastic center column undereneath the dash, ended up not adhering to the embossed plastic center column.
in the past on ebay (may still be there) i've seen a plastic thing that sticks to the carpet (its removable) and helps women keep their purses there w/o it sliding left or right. but aren't there enough nooks and crannies in the prius to hide all our nick nacks?
I personally have one of the older prius models, and i really like the console that connects to the cup holders and has the gear shift on it. I am looking at buying a newer prius and the only thing that is holding me back is the fact that they took out the large center console. They said taller people complained that they hit their knees on it
