MFD Avg: MPG Uh.... what's MFD? I figure 40.57 MPG (365 / 8.996) :blink:
Calc'd Avg: Uh... how's this different? Rounded? 41 MPG?

Fuel Added: 8.996 gal.
Cost: $24.20 ($2.69/gal - E10 - 1st tank of this... we'll see how the mileage bears out)

QUESTION: Since the gas bladder doesn't hold a fixed amount of gas, how reliable is the fuel economy computation? Do you go by the total number of trip miles for that tank & divide that by the amount of gallons you put in when it was empty?

Tank MPG = 58.5 calculated, 59.8 MFG
miles driven = 577.4
fuel added = 9.874 gallons
tank average temperature = 60 F
driving conditions = 60% hiway at 55 - 70 MPH, 40 city at 35-45 MPH.
Hiway this tank was totally without cruise, saw 5 MPG improvement by not using cruise.

 

It's been very mild here for the most part. av. temp according to PSE&G =46

SO FAR:
MILES 1138.4
GAL 24.405
MPG 46.6462

I haven't bought gas all year, I'm seeing 53.4 on the display for this tankful, 72 degree days help.

 

East of Seattle it's been in the 20s and 30s lately. I filled up recently with two pips left on the gas gauge, and could only get 6 gallons in. It was snowing outside at the time. My lifetime milage is 42.4mpg on the MFD for around 1750 miles of driving since mid October. 25 miles into the new tank, the first pip went out. Looking forward to summertime when I can get more gas into the tank.

Darn! I can't compete with you Tideland. Please tell me you drive at least 20 minutes each time you get in the car and spend most of your time on the freeway. My trips are usually about 12 minutes and almost never on a freeway. If it is on a freeway it is usually up the steep malahat highway! Doh!

Wow, so despite your commutes challenges you still get really good numbers.

How quickly do you generally accelerate from a stop relative to the cars beside and behind you? I tend to leave other cars behind - based on the idea that the engine is more efficient at higher rpms- unless of course that I can see that I'm going to have to decelerate again right away.

Right now I'm trying to get under 6.0 L/100km (with no freeway driving and many a short trip) on this tankful.

Is it real cold where you are? I am still on my first tank of my new 2007 Prius, but I am consistently getting only 29 MPG Daytime highs have been in the 30's here lately. Only the last two days has it got into the 40's It even snowed two days, and temps did not get above freezing.

I have been keeping a close eye on the Energy and Consumption screens, and I see that my Prius only runs on battery power when I first start it up, or when I start moving after a traffic stop. And that is only for a couple of seconds. The rest of the time, I am running on gas motor only.

Now the Energy screen shows the system trying to recharge my battery. Yet, it does not show much in the way of watts being regenerated. So the battery never gets fully charged. It varys from showing a 2/3 to 3/4 charge in the battery.

What is wrong? Did I get a lemon? Or is it just a factor of it being cold, and my taking such short trips?

I saw someone from Alaska post better mileage than what I cam getting, though.

10 minute trips will do that. Especially if you let the car warm up a bit before you drive it. If you're really concerned about it, next time you fill up your tank, take a 30 minute drive. Remember to reset your MFD MPG. You should then see it do better.

 

I'm sorry to hear that I won't be able to calculate my mileage the old fashioned way. I keep hitting the reset button on the MFD when I wipe fingerprints off the display screen. <_<

I feel compelled to keep the car spotless until the first nick in the paint or one of my grubby kids christens her with something other than a bottle of champaigne. After all, she's only a two week old baby today. Like a proud momma I love those days when the temps rise above 30F and I entertain/annoy colleagues by announcing my baby's latest trick, "She got 52 mpg today!"
