I went to the web site of the company that supplies the seat material for Prius. www.alcantara.it They state to use "ethyl alcohol" to clean stains in seats. Does anybody know where I can get this product? Thanks!!!

It is just plain old rubbing alcolholavailable at any drugstore.

"What does rubbing alcohol have in it?

    Active Ingredients
Ethyl Alcohol by Volume 70% "

I use ArmorAll cleaning wipes. Glass wipes would probably do an equally good job.

For most stains, just water and a cloth work wonders.

Really! I just washed out a set-in chocolate stain in about 3 minutes, just with a little micro fiber rag & some water, nothing else.

I don't use anything else - though I will if someting non water-soluble gets on the fabric.

Probably the original poster knows this, after looking at the Alcantara site - but for other folks reading along, I thought I should mention this.

Richard...you don't take blood pressure medication do you? Propranolol is a Beta Blocker use to treat heart conditions, hyperthyroidism and high blood pressure as well as a few other indications...!! I seriously doubt it would be very effective for cleaning upholstry, though I'd need to see a few double blinded controlled cross-over studies to prove it!! 8)

Ethyl alcohol is the alcohol in spirits. Booze. If you want pure a druggist might be able to supply it, other wise your local liquor store and look for EverClear closest to pure you can get, without a strip search to find out what your doing with grain alcohol. Oh and I don't drink any more. ya ya and no not any less either.

Rubbing alcohol is "Isopropyl Alcohol" - not sure what that would do to the stain or the fabric.

Here is a snippet from a post from a BMW forum that I found when looking for information on this subject:

    "Water-soluble stains
    -----------------------
Iit is recommended, depending on the type of stain, that you should use water, lemon juice, or pure ethyl alcohol (from liquors) and follow the instructions below if James cleaning products are not available.

NOTE: pure ethyl alcohol is considered drinkable and in used by the liquor industry; based on my research, difficult or almost impossible to purchase without a license or permit. See this link for more info on different types of alcohol.<-- Denatured alcohol is pure ethyl alcohol that has an agent added so it is not drinkable so it can be purchased at any local hardware store. Since it's not pure, I wouldn't use it on Alcantara."

I purchased my 2002 Prius with 15,000 miles on it last month. My concern is I think the people that had it before me smoked. I am trying to get that out of the seats and every where else. That is why I was going to this extreme. So far I love this car and the groups like this one. Thanks!

I'm almost positive that material is completely different than the stuff in the '04. You might just wanna get it professionally cleaned. :|

In Lousiana, the drive through daiquiri stands don't give a straw with the closed container. Thus, the drive doesn't have a direct way of drinking the beverage. No wonder there's not much federal $ spent on roads in LA. Crazy!

To get back to the original question. One answer from a old chem major. Denatured Ethanol has small amounts of methanol in it. I doubt the seat will notice. I had some and tried it out no problem. In some states you can get high proof ethanol i.e. EtOH. I don't remember but I think it is about 95% give or take 3%. Too many years. Absolute EtOH is available chem labs can get it but it is distilled over benzine it is 99.9+ but the small amounts of benzine are really bad. Use the denatured EtOH you will like it as long if you don't drink it. You want something with a big kick use 121 Vodka. If you want a recipe let me know I will fill you in on the Yucca Flats. Goes down easy then kaboom. We had a party for the freshman girls every year.

I ended up using medical alcohol I got at CVS. I had a couple bad stains on the drivers seat. I had tried several stain removers and none of them made a dent in the stain. I used the alcohol and was very impressed that the stains were gone with one application. WOW! The alcohol really works!!

so i can't simply just rip the cloth seats out and throw it in the washer/dryer? I had the impression that the fabric was zipped up with a zipper that can be removed if needed cleaning...

i guess i'll try isoproply rubbing alochol 70% USP tonight unless someone replies and tells me not to :p

Try some Bounce or other dryer sheets, here is a hint that I have used with good results. It came in a long list of uses for dryer sheets. It may take a while but it does work if replace them periodially.

To freshen the air in your car - Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat.
