12v battery

I don't know anything about the battery and they don't even have Prius as a model under Toyota. However, if it will fit in the space, I don't know why you couldn't. However, if the yellow top is truely a deep cycle, and the OEM isn't it might confuse the charging circuit.

Given that the Prius never needs any CCAs, a deep cycle seems like the best design.

 

I'm not sure there's any advantage, even if there is an Optima that will fit in the allocated space. If you park your car and go on vacation, the difference would be minimal. Remember that is NOT the battery that starts the engine! In the 04 Prius, that battery powers the electronic system that tells the BIG battery to start the engine.

A much simpler solution (mine) is to use any 12V source with a plug that fits the dash - not the console - power socket. Then, make the simple mod generously provided by Coastal Dave to keep that socket HOT with ignition off. My 12V rechargeable flashlight does double-duty. It plugs into the console power socket and stays charged when the car is running, and if the car's 12V battery were to die that flashlight would start it.

If I ever get in the car and find it "dead", I'd plug that 12V flashlight into the dash socket. The car will go ON, seven seconds later the engine will start, and everything will be just fine.

Been doing some research on this topic. The tech documents say to replace the battery with S34B20R or S46B24R. The battery in my prius BC package is made by GS 46B24R. You can peel off a sticker on the top of the battery covering up that information. The 46B24R battery is also know as NS60, LxWxTH (Terminal Height) 9.4x5x8.9 in (238x127x227mm). The only problem might be the terminal posts on the battery which are the Japanese standard. The size on them are 14.7mm for the positive and 13.0mm for the negitive. I cant find SAE size yet to compare them with the US standard. However it is possible to remove the battery terminals on the car and replace them with the US standard. So if you feel comfortable with exchangeing the terminals you can install the Optima D51 battery in you car. (236.5x128.6x227mm)

One other concern is that the battery has a vent tube to vent the gasses that are produced when charging the battery, but on the otherhand people mount the optima batteries in the trunk or cargo area of the car, so it might not be a big concern.

 

Where can one get such a flashlight??

 

I have no power available in our garage so I have bought a 50meter power cord which I can real out when needed (but not full time). I also have a regulated power supply which can provide upto 15V at upto 20amp. Anyone know how much current at 12V is needed to boot the car if the 12v goes flat?

We are going to the USA and the carribian for 3 weeks in December, and the day after we get back (christmas day) I have to work, so the car must start! My plan was to have the PSU available via the front terminals if required, but I need to know what grade cable tu use to connect to the car from the PSU.
