This is kinda fun... not sure how practical it will be in actual battle, but can see it for riot control and such.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070125/ap_on_re_us/ray_gun_4
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(efusco @ Jan 25 2007, 11:49 AM) </div> Realistically, it would be useless in battle. Talk about a perfect target for an anti-radar missile If you read the text of the news release which goes along with the photo, its primary target is civil unrest (talk about a classic oxymoron) to reduce collateral damage (aka, killing innocent people who just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, or are being used as human shield, another popular insurgency tactic). They're always telling us this or that is harmless. Cyclamates, Agent Orange, radioactive waste. Whenever the government says something is harmless I take it as one more indication of how gullible they think we are.

I remember seeing info on this some time back. At the time, it was not harmless. Nothing too bad, but if you stayed in the beam for a short time (approximately 3-5 seconds), then you could begin to get red skin and small blisters. The big concern then (beyond abuse) was that if it were aimed into a crowd, the people in the center of the crowd may not be able to escape the beam, especially if nobody the edges of the crowd aren't being affected by it, and don't move. So yes, for very short exposure, it was harmless. But any significant amount of time led to physical damage, and could in theory lead to permanent damage. But they could have corrected that now (not likely, due to the basic nature of EM radiation, without some sort of logic shutting it off after a set amount of continuous use).
