Do any of you think that storing the fob too close to the vehicle while the vehicle is stored for 4 or 5 days will cause a drain on the 12 V battery enough that the vehicle will not start? I have been storing it about 12-15 feet from the front of the car, in my house (an exterior wall separates the two).

For those of you who frequent this forum may remember that I had aux (12V battery) problems about 8 weeks ago and purchased a new battery. This new one was completely drained after 4.5 days in my garage...nothing left on in the car (after my last episode I make sure to confirm this each time I exit the car). I kept the "old" battery, which I have since recharged and used it to jump the car...of course it worked just fine (lost all my navigation "previous" addresses, though).

I love this car, but really would like to get this resolved. FYI, it is a 2005 with 60,000 miles on it--90% highway.

Nothing more to add. Just bumping this to the top of the list, in hopes of a couple of opinions.

    Coupla things:

    1. if the battery is going dead that quickly, you've got excess dark current somewhere; that is, even when the car is officially "powered off," something is drawing down the 12v battery when it shouldn't. Have you checked to see if the JBL audio system is malfunctioning?...this is known to cause problems similar to what you've described.

    2. Don't know about the fob storage issue. I can tell you that the SKS looks for the presence of a fob every second or two...but what the innards of the car do after it finds it, I don't know. Normally, (as you know already) that the interior lights come on when the SKS transceiver senses the fob. But they go off, too, after a bit of time, if you don't enter...do you think something like this is happening, where the interior lights are somehow coming on periodically due to the presence of the fob...or, there's a fault somewhere and the interior lights stay on?

Other than that, I can't of anything that's powered up under these circumstances...but I could be mistaken.

Have you tried NOT storing the fob so close, or simply turning off the SKS for a while? Seems to me to be the logical thing to try next. But if you've been having this problem before storing the fob so close, it's definitely time to figure out what's 'on' when it shouldn't be.

If the car is locked with the fob remaining near the car, the car and fob will continually 'talk' for a while. The Prius is programmed to stop 'talking' after a while. I believe it is 10 minutes if the fob is near, and it will stop looking for the fob after 5 days.

I would go with Pinto Girl's suggestion in verifying the problem is/isn't SKS by turning it off for a bit. You could be getting an abnormal drain from somewhere else.
Also note, Headlights left in the ON position and relying on Auto-Off can also create an increased drain on the 12V battery.

The way all the electronics work, is all the components are provided with high current unswitched 12V, with switched low current 12V to turn on the devices. This is much like how modern aftermarket auto audio amps and radios work. So if an ECU/Electronics malfunctions, it could remain 'ON' and drain the battery even though the car is actually off.

    Thank you both for responding.

Your posts are always very helpful...to everyone.

Yesterday, I moved where I store the fob. I also removed the 12V battery and recharged it. Finally, I changed out the batteries on each of the fobs.

If this happens again, I will take it in and have them check the JBL unit and see if it it causing a draw....unless there is a way I can check this myself (I have an ohm/volt meter).

    FYI,
Last night, after fully charged (with an external battery charger), via the diagnostic screen, the 12V battery was putting out 12.4 volts with the car in acc mode. With the car started, it jumps to 14.4-14.6V. After sitting overnight...everything (except SKS) off and locked, the diagnostic screen showed 12.4 volts in acc mode and 14.5-14.7 with car running...the same as last night.

    Thanks again,

    Rick

Is this considered an unusual drain?

Left the vehicle outside at O'Hare Airport for 48 hours. Everything (INCLUDING SKS) off. Confirmed everything was locked tight.

Acc mode, diagnostic screen shows 12.4 Volts

    48 hours later (temps 27-40 degrees F)

Acc mode, diagnostic screen shows 11.4 Volts

That is about .021 Volts per hour drain on the 12 volt aux battery.

That seems high to me...but I really do not know much about this stuff.

Should I have it checked out?

Well, for those interested in my stupidity, here it goes...

I put a DVD player in the car a few months ago (got the lockpick) and did everything except the power connection myself. I took it into a well-known car audio company to have that part done by them. I told them to run it from the 12V power outlet at the front center lower dash.

After going through 2 batteries and several jumps (which I am now very good at, by the way), I decided to "check their work." Much to my dismay, the power connection was from two wires going into the back of the head unit.

I looked at the manual for the unit and saw this under power cosumption: "Less than 1W in stand-by mode; and less than 12W in use."

I suspected that a unit like this might draw a little current, which is why I wanted it powered from the 12V plug up front.

I do not know much about electricity, but my guess is that the 1W is enough to draw down a 12V battery after several days in the cold...of course I could be wrong.

I re-wired it myself and the battery (through the diagnostic screen) has held at 12.2V for 24 hours now.

Thought I would share my experience (as embarrassing as is it is) in hopes that this may help another person struggling with a dwindling 12V charge...not that anyone else would be as dumb as I have been.

I should have checked their work.

Oh the shame of it all...

Had a very similiar experience with my first Miata in the early 90's. Added a Sears cruise control and added the hot wire to the radio fuse since the radio didn't work without the car running. Had two dead batteries and probably had one replaced under warranty before using a bigger flashlight and voltmeter to figure out that I had chose the radio fuse that also ran the clock so it was always on.

    Oh well, s*** happens.

When you consider the capacity of that little 12 vdc battery, yeah there you go. Make sure you fully charge the battery now that you've - hopefully - uncovered the problem.

    Nice diagnosis...glad you found it.

I'm adding this to my mental list of 'what ifs.'

    Rick,

Kudos to you for sharing the reason behind the battery drain - as embarrassing as it is (and it shouldn't be for you really, you left it in the hands of professionals) was, we all still learn from these experiences. I appreciate it, FWIW.

Assuming it was even in "standby" mode while you car was off. If all you did was turn off the car, expecting the DVD player to turn off, then it might not have ever gone into standby.

Hmm... I don't know. I left my passenger map light on overnight two nights ago and I didn't have a dead battery.

Could be if the battery is already in a partially discharged state, it wouldn't take much to drop below 10 volts.

so you're saying the two occasions the lights were left on, I've been fortunate enough to have a full battery?

Cause most people's issues were either the map light or the dome/cargo area light. Both have been left on overnight before and I had no issues the next morning.

However, I have had a dead battery before but that was at school and I have no idea how it died. No lights were left on in that occasion (headlights, map, dome, cargo. .nada).

Well, the OP did state the person who installed his DVD player made a booboo with the wiring, so there was a constant drain on the battery. Like any lead acid battery, once you discharge it often enough, and leave it in a partially charged state, you will damage it. You will also experience sulfation.

So not only will the battery be only partially charged, it will also have much reduced capacity. If you catch the problem in time, and have access to a battery charger with built-in desulfation, you can usually save the battery.

Exactly my situation. Have a charger with a desulfation capability. Used it for the first battery...worked like a charm. Need to do it for the second battery.

I have 2005 prius also. What is the (diagnostic screen shows 12.4 Volts) that you refer to in this post?

Rick, did the installers explain why they ignored your instructions?

Also, what is the intriguing ACC diagnostic screen you mentioned?
