Today I noticed the MFD had a message drop down that said outside temperature 37 degrees. I only noticed it once. Does it continue to tell you it is 37 degrees? Does it tell you each time the temp drops a degree? How frequently should I expect to see this notice while it is 37 degrees or lower?
I noticed on mine if it is 37 degrees out side or jumping from 36 to 37 or 38 to 37 it will keep popping up but if its anything below 37 it will only pop up only one time.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Renocat @ Dec 3 2006, 02:44 PM) </div> I don't watch for it continuously, but AFAIK it only displays briefly as the temperature drops to 37. Of course, the "snow icon" shows up whenever the temperature is 37 or below. That is, the icon showing a snow flake over the "highway". Dave M.
the drop down on the screen only displays a few times in rapid succession, but the snowflake REMAINS on the idiot light cluster till temps rise above 37F
No snowflakes on '06, '07 models. I've never seen the temp drop down either, but I havn't really paid that close attention to it. B)
I have an '06...no snow flake. So if I miss that the temp has dropped, tough luck? I mean I can read the display that says what the temp is and I sort of now what kind of weather I am driving in but what is the point of a one time 3 second flash that the temp is now 37 degrees? <_<
i think the 37 degree warning was originally designed to accompany the snowflake icon (telling you why the snowflake just came on) - 3ish seconds is generally enough time for you to see the icon flash on and glance at the MFD to see what the issue is. They removed the snowflake in 2006, but apparently didn't differentiate the programming in the MFD, so we still get that 37 degree warning.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(MarinJohn @ Dec 3 2006, 04:05 PM) </div> Actually, it goes on at 37* and turns off at 41*.
My 2007 Base Prius has the snowflake, it will flash on the screen briefly and then go away. I've seen it come on quite a few times in the last few days of driving, as it's been cold around here in the Seattle area lately. Dave

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Renocat @ Dec 4 2006, 01:57 PM) </div> I'm bringing this post back from the dead. My question is WHY do they have it set for 37*? freezing tempratures are 32* arent they? why not make it 32*?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Numba1goalie @ Jan 19 2007, 01:28 PM) </div> There's a potential for dangerous driving conditions above 32 degrees, such as under bridges, hence the 37 degree warning.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Renocat @ Dec 3 2006, 05:44 PM) </div> My MFD always displays the outside temp in the upper right corner. I haven't noticed any kind of a drop down. Maybe this is an advantage of the lower end MFD. I also don't have an idiot snowflake. I'm sure the Northern posters will confirm that you don't need the car to tell you when it's cold. Conversely, if you need the car to tell you it's cold outside then maybe you shouldn't be driving anyway. I'd be happy to trade all my icons and idiot lights for some accurate gauges.
My Prius does the drop down thing too at 37 degrees....I basically wish that we could change the setting to where that display would drop down at 32 degrees since basically that is the freezing temp. It can get annoying at times though seeing it repeatedly dropping down like that.
What I find kind of weird is that if the temp starts below 37 (say I'm parked outside) and stays there, I never see any warning. It's only when the outside temp is exactly 37 that I see anything.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(aaf709 @ Jan 19 2007, 04:32 PM) </div> That would be on bridges.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Renocat @ Dec 3 2006, 05:44 PM) </div> Hmmmm...wonder if I'll ever see that...hmmmmm It did get down to mid 30s here last year for a few hours. I'll have to get up early someday and run out to see if it works. Cheers, Larry
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Numba1goalie @ Jan 19 2007, 04:28 PM) </div> That's a good question, so as a Northerner, I'll answer it. After a long cold spell, usually late winter, it is common that the ground below roads has chilled down well below freezing. In a sense, the ground beneath roads acts like a refrigerated ice rink. So even when temperatures are above freezing, the colder ground below can cause ice to form on roads when air temperatures are above freezing, above 32F. This often occurs on sidewalks as well. And when temperatures rise above freezing, this is often accompanied by damp air. Moisture condenses on cold ground surfaces (sidewalks and roads) and creates very slippery icing, even when air temperatures are above freezing. Harry
I've noticed this and think once again now that someone at Toyota got paranoid and did something undocumented so we would all post about it and guess what it is all about and why. Does anyone from Toyota or who has a concise answer to these questions ever post the answers? Can this 37 degrees F be set to read at 32 degrees F? After all...I have seen the OAT read below 32 even so what was the point in flashing at 37??? Stop talking about it and get us/me a REAL answer please? I've never driven such a lame intelligent car before. Oh, and btw, my Toyota dealer in Central Oregon sucks when it comes to trying to get answers on technical Prius questions. Maintence didn't have a clue and wasn't interested in finding out the answer(s) on this one. A couple sales people guessed that it was a warning that the temp was near freezing. I thought it might be some erroneous reading until I found these posts. I'll keep reading--but am I disappointed so far.
