As I can't be bothered with egr's bad design of engines/ piston rings etc. Yes the Gen3 is arguably a better car but it is a personal opinion.
The Gen3 is s nice shape etc but it isn't the be all etc.

Yeah the EGR and low-friction piston rings, what a couple of missteps by Toyota.

EGR cleaning is a “moderate” complexity DIY, easily doable in a weekend. See top two links in my signature, plus this:
Professional EGR Cleaning Resources | Page 9 | PriusChat

(On a phone turn it landscape to see signatures)

When oil consumption takes off, piston/ring replacement (or new short block) is the cure. The attached TSB has more info.

But I get your point: it’s a preposterous amount of involvement: Toyota’s “design team” is an untrained puppy, and we’re cleaning up after it. :cautious:

Can you do a quick summary of your gen 3, the miles on it, how long you’ve had it?

id agree with you btw, Toyota dropped the ball here, and most for sale are just being ditched for the “issues”.

I know people don't believe this and I'm sure it doesn't work in 100% of cases, but a quick B12 piston soak has essentially solved my oil burning issues for the last 30k miles. Went from 1qt every 1,000 miles to 1/4qt every 10,000 miles.

There's not a lot of cars that aren't high potential for grief at that mileage.

I know it isn't the general crap being me, it is the egr and hg stuff mainly. As I said already, it is a time bomb waiting.
Having said that, it may already have been done as I have no history with it.

Gen2 is like a tank and Gen3 is like a delicate flower... My dream car is a 2009 with hardly any miles on it.

When you get back to a Gen too it's a completely different animal You don't be doing any of this stuff for a long time there's no EGR to clean nothing to deal with like this other than the break actuator of course the batteries as needed No you're not going to do anything with a hybrid without batteries and that's really the major stuff these cars are like tanks You just close the door on a generation too and a generation 3 sitting beside each other you can tell the car you want to keep or you're just not a car person or something

I don't know the OP's circumstances in life, but why go backward...instead of forward? Perhaps it's just me, but unless you have an old collectable that's an investment...purchasing and throwing good money into a 25+ YO car makes no sense. Are the GEN 5s not to your liking?

    Respects.

Gen 5 is very costly That's the problem and I'm not sure about that engine just yet could be problematic just like the one we're leaving The one I went back to is not that problematic no matter how old it is seriously I've got them from 400K down to 150 and in between none of those have been anything like any Gen 3 we've had and like many others here have had apparently to me that's not working backwards at all that's going with the super reliable setup that's known by many or most or not but it is for us the five is very cute it's very tight in the five too so you think you had room in a three or a two just wait till you get in the five If you're over 511 I wish you much happiness and then we're talking Toyo build quality today. I think most of the manufacturers have fallen into the stockholder trap they need you buying cars every 3 to 5:00 no matter what and we'll do anything to make that happen not to me they won't
